Do you have an in-car or headrest model DVD player?

If so, could you perhaps answer a few questions for me . . . .

1. Do you turn it on every time your LO's are in the car?

2. If not, then how often do you turn it on?

3. Do your LO's expect/anticipate it to be on all the time and if it's not does it cause any meltdowns?

My reason for asking is because we were gifted one for Christmas and I'm curious what to expect. Our boys are 15 months, should we install it now or maybe wait til their older? I don't mind jumping right on it and installing it now, DS2 is a total screamer when it comes to being in his carseat and I'm sorta hoping (wishing) this will get him to stop and make our car rides more enjoyable!

ETA: Or headrest models too . . . I'm really just wondering what each of your experiences are with them.

Re: Do you have an in-car or headrest model DVD player?

  • We opted to get portable players that could be strapped onto the headrests, rather than an in-car system, and the biggest reason is because I refuse to turn the damn things on every single time we get in the car.  I feel like they need to know how to entertain themselves for appropriate lengths of time without constantly having to be glued to movies or electronics.  We only use ours for long car trips (minimum 2 hours), and that is the only time they are even in the car.  They don't expect it at all, and it helps on the long trips that they still get excited enough about the novelty of watching movies in the car.

And I imagine it would depend on the individual kids, but I know my DS would flip the fu.ck out if it was in the car and I wouldn't turn it on.  Out of sight, out of mind though.  ;)

  • I have the headrest DVD players. I only put them on for long car trips, at least 90 min. where they can watch a Disney movie or Dora DVD that has several episodes on it. I don't use it every day because with the cords to connect it is kind of a pain getting the kids in and out with that stuff hanging in the way. But for a long car ride it is a must have.

I also had a carseat cryer when they were younger, she still does not do great on car rides that are 2 hours or longer and they are almost 3 1/2. When they were your kids age, I bought a bunch of stuffed toys with rings and rattles and other soft books and stuff from a MoM's sale I think I paid like $1 each for the toys. I put them in a box in the car to sit between their seats. I made sure the box was full enough that they could always grab some toys easily and she did start to calm down some and play with the toys. But there were days where I listed to a lot of fussing and crying while running errands. I also wore earplugs when I drove. I knew she was not crying because she was in distress, just that she hated being in her carseat and in the car. So I had to wear earplugs so I could drive safely. Her crying would make my bloodpressure shoot through the roof and I was so anxious and shaking all the time while driving. It was the only way I could stand to take her anywhere in the car.

Oh and she got a lot better when she turned 2. Again at 3 1/2 she still has some issues, but things did get a whole lot better after 2.

I appreciate the advice, thank you. And boy did you hit the nail on the head about your bloodpressure, I actually had to chuckle reading someone else's description of the feeling!
