Infertility

New article re: celiac disease and unexplained IF

I just got my weekly CD newsletter and this link was included.  It seems that there is an article about infertility/miscarriage/etc. in every newsletter.

Re: New article re: celiac disease and unexplained IF

  • I've been reading a lot about celiac disease since new research shows it could be the cause of IUGR-- which is what we dealt with.  What's scary is I've found most people who have unexplained infertility (which could be caused by celiac disease) won't have any other symptoms.

Guess I'm grateful they are doing the research and learning all this.  Thanks for the link!

  • You are absolutely correct in that people with infertility caused by un-Dx'ed Celiac disease may not have other (obvious) symptoms.  Somewhat thankfully, I have the type of CD that includes a rash, so have an obvious outward sign.  (Although, it wasn't obvious for a long time, my doctors thought it was eczema until a GF diet cleared a horrific, all-consuming rash).

My daughter's placenta was not functioning when she was born (by emergency induction) and she had no amniotic fluid.  Had my doctor not been "on it" enough to realize something was wrong, she probably would have been still-born. I feel strongly that our miscarriage was caused by CD, as there was no medical explanation for our loss.  I didn't know that I have CD at that point.

I feel like this has become my soapbox.  I hope that I can help just ONE person look into CD as the cause of their infertility.

  • Firefightersgal... I asked my internist about Celiac Disease because of our unexplained infertility, my cousin has CD, and I have had GI problems most of my life (was diagnosed with IBS). Well she ran blood work for Celiac that came back negative. I still wonder if I could have CD since it doesn't always show up with blood work... I would try a gluten free diet but it seems really difficult and I will be honest if I do not have CD I couldn't imagine giving up my baked goods LOL.

What would be your next step? Should I speak to my RE about it? What tests should be ran other than the b/w?

    TIA

  • If a blood test comes back as negative, doctors (in my experience) won't run any further tests and dismiss CD as a possibility.  However, if you had a positive blood test, you could also have an intestinal biopsy done to determine how much damage has been done to your intestines.

A GF diet is not any fun and it is difficult to move toward.  However, if it helps your GI issues AND allows you to get (and stay) pregnant, it would certainly be worth it.

I would probably bring it up to your RE and let them know that you had a negative blood test, but that you still have concerns.

  • Here is an interesting discusson re: testing negative for CD:

  • Is CD a hereditary disorder?
  • Yes, it is heredity. In my case, I'm the first in my family to be diagnosed.
