3rd Trimester

decreased fetal movement

I'm still feeling baby moving, just much less the last few days.  I was getting a lot of big rolls & jabs & now it's like LO is barely shifting a leg or arm to get more comfortable.  The heartrate was normal yesterday @ my OB appt but lower than usual.  When I called to inquire when I should be concerned, they said I should come in to be monitored.  I feel like I'm worrying to much, but then I'd hate to ignore it & have something be wrong.

Re: decreased fetal movement

  • if they want you to go in i would. that said I had the same conversation with my OB yesterday (although LO HR was not low) and she said smaller and less frequent movements, more rolling and less kicking are to be expected hereonout because LO has very little room in there

  • At 36 weeks the same thing happened to me.  I couldn't feel the baby move at all.  It freaked me out and I went in for the NST and everything came back perfect.  A few days later he was back to his normal active self but the NST made me feel so much better.  It's definitely worth it to go in for the test and make sure everything is okay.  It'll put your mind at ease.  As my midwife says "happy healthy mommy equals a happy healthy baby"

Also, I was kind of embarrassed when I went in and found out everything was perfect.  The doc said not to worry because it happens ALL the time.  Sometimes babies just have sleepy lazy days like we do.

I have a feeling this is the case, but sometimes it just feels better to know for sure.  I think partly it caught my attention because normally the HR is in the 150's & yesterday it was 138, still normal & healthy, but much lower than it has been the entire pregnancy.  I'm feeling baby move as I type this, just not the same as most days.  so I'm probably just being paranoid.

  • Go in...it will make you feel better but don't overstress while you are waiting for results because decreased movement at this point can be normal
  • It's probably just because you have less room in there.  I wouldn't be too concerned, but go in and get monitored for a bit.  It won't hurt.

  • We just asked about this yesterday.  My OB said that movements should still be felt, but that they would probably be smaller with more rolling/moving than kicks at this point.  He said that as long as I'm still feeling SOME movement not to worry.  We're also being monitored twice a week and inducing next week, so that helps me stay a little more calm.

  • I have days where LO is less active and I am at a similar time point as you. I always assumed she's either being lazy or doesn't feel like moving with the little room she has.

  • It could be due to baby's lack of room to roll around in there... If you really want going in to be your last resort, you could try lying on your side and/or drinking something cold. That normally gets my LO moving... A couple weeks ago I noticed DD hadn't moved ANY in a few hours and when the 2 methods I mentioned above were of no help, I went to L&D. Made me feel much better! GL!
  • I had decreased movement with DS last time at one point and when my Dr popped his head in at L&D to tell me everything was fine, i started apologizing cause i felt like a crazy pregnant lady overreacting, at which point he sat down next to me and said, "you did everything right, to tried drinking cold fluids, all the usual tricks. Its better to come get checked so if something is wrong we have a fighting chance if something had be wrong. Don't apologize for listening to your instincts."

  • You're doing the right thing, but also remember that LO is getting bigger in a place that seems smaller and smaller so he/she will begin to run out of space and get "quiet" as we call it in my family. Both of my boys did and they are just fine :) They just run out of space to kick and flip!
  • well the minute they hooked me up, LO started having a party in my belly moving around like crazy!  of course the NST showed perfectly.  I am surprised that they didn't 1st suggest I try laying down & having some juice before coming in tough.  now I know for next time to try that 1st, but for now, I have peace of mind & I doubt I'll worry again.
