Cloth Diapering

Onesies + Cloth = Bad Combo?

Since DH and I will be CD'ing baby #1, I lurk here quite a bit to just absorb all the great info and advice.  While lurking, a comment on another thread about onesies absorbing pee (don't ask me which, read a TON of them today in my post-holiday catch up Big Smile) got me wondering, are onesies considered a bad idea for cloth diapers, with tees being a better idea?  I'd never thought about it before and would love some first-hand knowledge!  We're planning to start with primarily PF's and covers (with a few fitteds to try them out) and will probably do a trial of other styles once the LO gets past that newborn stage.

 TIA!

Re: Onesies + Cloth = Bad Combo?

  • I prefer shirts with CD's, but onesies are fine in our experience. DS actually just had a blowout that got on his onesie, but that happens every once in a while whether it's a onesie OR shirt. For us, shirts make it easier to check his diaper and change it- but they aren't a necessity :)

  • Not sure why it would make a difference other than the fit.  I have noticed that my DD outgrows onesies faster because the CDs are a little bulkier.  Other than that, there should be no reason not to wear a onesie with a CD.  I've actually had less leaks and blowouts with cloth than with disposables so less shirts are ruined.  Plus, if the clothing does get poop on it, I know how to handle it better since I treat it just like my CDs!

  • We still use onesies with DD
  • We've never had a problem with onesies.

  • I loathe onsies with CDs. They were always, always, always wet. If we used them at all, they were left unsnapped/tucked into pants. The edges of the leg openings always wiggled their way into the teeny spaces between baby's thigh and diaper, and wicked pee or gathered poo. Makes me frustrated just to think about, lol. I have also seen a blog post about someone cutting all her onsies into shirts. I guess they roll a bit after washing but don't fray because of the material. They also were snug with the extra fluff on the booty. But, if you go up a size or two you may not have that issue. I was just over it and out away all our onsies quickly after LO was born. TShirts are way easier IMO.

  • I also hate onesies. But I have a really hard time finding shirts for LO.

  • Thanks everyone!

    All of this!

I love onesies - I can't stand having to constantly pull DD's shirts back down over her, especially in winter when it's a little chillier I don't want her skin exposed.  We use almost exclusively onesies with pants.  But she definitely is in a bigger size of clothes than her weight would imply because the diapers are bulkier.

  • I have never had a problem. I also think if you have a baby who perhaps has a shape that makes it an issue, it might also be an issue in disposables.

I do like shirts for the ease of checking if the diaper needs changing, but onesies are better for keeping his back covered.

This! My baby has the flattest butt, so keeping any diaper on him is a task. We NEED the onesie just to keep a diaper on him!

  • I've never had this problem, and DD wears a lot of onesies (especially now that she can get her aplix diapers off!) I also have this thing about not liking her belly to be exposed...

Sometimes I do have to size up on them, though b/c the diaper takes up a lot of room.

  • I have the issue that her tights push the onsie into the diaper but thats solved by putting the tights under. If it's getting a bit short I just do up the middle snap :) they last a bit longer like that...tshirts are reserved for at home use or when its COLD over a onsie :)

It's a love/hate relationship. They fit, but it gets snug faster than I think it would if he were in disposables. Also, I've found (esp. with pockets) that the onesie does find it's way into the leg gussets. That drives me NUTS. It depends on the onesie and the diaper, I think. I'm thinking of picking up onesie extenders... Maybe that will help?
This. I find it happens more when in car seat or jumper or Exersaucer too, as onesie is pushed/pulled tighter and into diaper I think.
