That's the hospital I'll be giving birth at and I'm just curious what others' experiences were?
Was the staff nice? Pushy? Did you feel your voice was heard, or that they ignored you? Was your birth plan followed (as much as it could be anyway)? Please share!
Re: Please share your St. Elizabeth Edgewood experience
I had my daughter there in December 2008 and loved it. The lactation consultant was great as were the nurses and other staff. I like that they let you bond as a family by keeping the baby in the room with you. It is much more reassuring the first night or two of your new parenthood to have someone there just in case you realize you don't really know what you're doing. lol. The rooms are very spacious and the decor makes it much more warm and inviting than a traditional hospital room.
My only complaint is the cranky anesthesiologist that I got who kept reprimanding me when trying to give me my epi because I moved when I was having an intense contraction. I see her point of not wanting to paralyze me or anything, but at the time I could have used a little break until the contraction subsided.
The way your birth plan works really depends on your doctor/midwife I think rather than the hospital staff. The nurses do what the doctor tells them pretty much. My plan was pretty much out the window when my water broke and my contractions were so intense that I want from 0 to 3 cm in about 40 mins. At that point I just wanted the epi and luckily my doctor was there and gave the go ahead even though I was only 3 cm.
I would just talk any concerns out with the doctors during your visits. If you have a multi-doctor practice they will more than likely have you see all the doctors and you won't know who you will have in the room at the time of delivery. Address your concerns with all of them since they have have different approaches.
Thank you, this is great advice. My next appointment is Dec 5th. I feel so stupid because up until now I have had zero questions for my doctors (I go to Tri-State Women's Health, so it's a group practice) because I just didn't know what to ask. Now I have a lot of questions, but I won't be seeing the doctor I'll pick as my primary at this upcoming appt. I never thought about the fact that you should ask them all pretty much the same questions because they handle things differently - duh. Thank you!
I had a great experience there in November, and I was one who deviated from "the norm" with my birth plan. I think the most important thing you can do is just prepare and make sure you have a really strong support system who knows what you want. I'm a big midwife supporter as well.
