Glucose test at 8 am - fast?

I have my 1 hour glucose test at 8 am tomorrow, they told me I didn't need to fast, so I was planning to eat a piece of cheese and maybe some coffee with no sugar and just cream (I usually eat breakfast first thing so it will be hard for me to not eat anything at all).  For those who have taken the 1-hour test and passed, did you completely fast or not beforehand?  Thanks!

Re: Glucose test at 8 am - fast?

  • I had some scrambled eggs w a little cheese. I wouldn't want to skip breakfast if it wasn't necessary.

  • pp's idea of eggs and cheese is good.  protein is a good balance for sugar.  i would not fast for the test.

  • I was told to fast for 12 hrs.  I wonder if they test differently or if drs just have different ideas of what it takes to get an accurate reading.

  • If they didn't tell you to fast then I wouldn't. Id eat something healthy like eggs and toast. Theres no sense in making yourself more miserable if you dont have to!

ETA: I passed the one hour and did not fast before hand. My test was in the evening.

  • Midwife told me to not eat an hour before I drank the drink. So since I had to drink my drink at 9 (test was at 10), I couldn't eat after 8am. I ended up fasting though bc I woke up late. And I failed the 1hr and had to take the 3hr... you have to fast for the 3hr.

  • I had mine last week and they said I didn't have to fast but I couldn't eat or drink anything an hour before I drank the stuff.

  • Thank you so much for the responses!  I think I will eat something, but try to make sure its at least one hour before my appointment.

This. Even though I failed (they sprung the test on me and I had apparently eaten a few too many carbs for lunch) I could honestly tell you that the glucola drink would have made me sick to my stomach if I didn't have food in it.

  • I was told that I did not need to fast so I had scrambled egg whites with cheese (my standard breakfast). I passed just fine. If they told you fasting wasn't necessary, go ahead and eat. Just don't eat like 5 donuts. (Not like you would anyway.)

That damn drink gives me heartburn, and they don't let you take anything during the test! Not even a sip of water. That's why the three hour test is so horrible IMO. Three hours of a burning esophagus.

Me too! Omg I had the worst heatburn and gas cramps after that stupid drink, it was total crap.

  • I had mine at 8 am and I was told to fast so I did, but if they didn't tell you to do that then I would just have a protein based breakfast and you should be fine.  I passed but I will definitely say I was famished by the time I got out of the office.. going from 10 pm until 9:30 am without eating was miserable!

  • I did and I failed the 1 hour...so...maybe I should have eaten? My 3-hour went fine though.

  • I was told that I didn't have to fast, but to be safe I plan on hvaing eggs and toast an hour before the test.

  • My wife is currently at her 3 hr.

I'm a little surprised at some of the responses here - and I don't mean to come off "rude" but I don't really understand why someone would want to try and "cheat" this test.  Granted, I know it's a hassle and having to deal with GD until birth would be a pain, etc.  But I would think that knowing and handling the potential risks far outweighs the hassle.

I can't speak for my wife - but we did discuss it. And I know we would both rather know if she has GD so appropriate responses can be taken vs the even remote idea of trying to "trick" the test to get a result we prefer.

I'm sorry...maybe I missed it. But who here is cheating the test?

Eggs and toast is a perfectly healthy thing to eat for breakfast and what I eat pretty much every day. Just because we aren't throwing down on a cinnamon roll the size of our heads doesn't mean we are trying to sway the results.

You are right. You know what my problem is/was?  I posted in the wrong thread LOL. There's another (similar) thread where some posters are discussing ways to "cheat."   My apologies...

  • My test was 8:45am and they told me not to have anything after 9pm the night before.  I could have water and dry toast if I wanted.  It seems every office does theirs differently, so I would think if you were to eat, eggs would be a great choice because of the protein.  I wouldn't eat fruit because of the sugar.

And yes, the drink made me nauseous because I didn't have anything on my stomach.  I passed though.
