HSG Question...

I know everyone here recommends getting an HSG before going on meds. However, when I first started with my RE, he didn't suggest this and I had no knowledge of it to suggest it to him so I've never had one done. Since then I've completed 3 medicated cycles, ovulating on one with 150mg of Clomid plus a trigger, confirming with a low P4 of 12.

My question....Would I ovulate (or would b/w show ovulation) if my tubes are blocked? Or does a blocked tube just keep the sperm from meeting the egg and has no effect on P4 levels? I'm planning for an IUI next cycle, but I'm going to ask my RE about getting an HSG before that. They are typically performed fairly early on in your cycle, correct?

Re: HSG Question...

  • Yes, you'd O...but the egg couldn't get to the sperm.  I don't think (someone correct if I'm wrong) that P4 has anything to do with tubes.

Yes, HSG are usually performed by about CD 13/14

  • Like people have stated, you can easily o and have blocked tubes.    I hope this is not the case for you but you should definitely ask to get one.  I am surprised your RE has not already done this.  The HSG was one of the first things we did besides the b/w.

  • My RE never suggested HSG until I basically demanded it after multiple failed iui's.  He said I had no indications of blocked tubes so he didn't see the need.  He was right I didn't have any problems.  This time around he wants me to do it again to make sure I don't have any lingering issues from my pregnancy-- so obviously if he sees a need for it he'll order it.

I have to get mine done before cycle day 10.

  • Thanks, ladies. I thought this was probably the case, but wanted to make sure before I suggested it. My RE isn't the best so I get frustrated at times being that I'm the one who brings things up to him. I've had to demand monitoring, beg to have my cyst that developed in my unmonitored cycles aspirated, beg for a trigger, and now I'll suggest the HSG. He's the only RE within a 3hr drive so I'm stuck for now. Sad

  • I was in the same boat!  Had 3 failed IUI's and my dr never thought about doing an HSG.  Went to a new RE in December and the first thing she did was recommend one..turned out both of my tubes were blocked but were able to be cleared by doing the HSG (the dye forced its way).  Hopefully will have another IUI in Jan.

Very mad at my old RE now!  I would ask for one just in case!

  • Stupid question, I probably know this but I need to ask just to be sure, what is an HSG again? I'm going in for a hydrographic on Thursday, I think this may be the same thing but I just want to check!

  • I had an HSG in early November & that is how I discovered that both my tubes are blocked (we have been TTC for over a year). It is a frustrating situation. One tube can be cleared with a tubal catheterization, the other I would need surgery. Or there is the IVF route. I am so torn & overwhelmed. Good luck to you, I hope you get answers soon!

HSG is short for Hysterosalpingogram. It's a procedure docs use to test and see if your fallopian tubes are open or blocked. A dye is injected into your ute while the doc observes via xray. If your tubes are open, the dye should clearly be seen passing into your tubes. If one or both are blocked, no dye will pass, or the dye may actually clear up minor blockage.

Completely agree with this! You could have the answer with the HSG trying to figure out the cause. My Dr had this done before we did anything with our journey.

I might also get a second opinion from another RE because if this Dr. is missing having these types of diagnostic procedures done, he may not be very thorough on other things. I don't want to scare you by saying that but I have been to two REs and the HSG was a basic diagnostic done by both doctors. Take care and good luck

Me: 39 DH: 39 Dx: MFI, DOR, Poor Responder Our only option is IVF with ICSI; 1/11 IVF#1.1: Lupron flare, canceled lead follie/poor response; 3/11 IVF#1.2: EPP, canceled due to lead follicle/poor response; 10/11 IVF#1.3: Antagonist, microdose HCG, 2 embies 2dt BFN; 12/11 IVF #2: Stims started 12/17, ER: 12/27 3R, 1 mature, 1 fert, other 2 eggs matured overnight and rescue ICSI performed and both fertilized! I wish that was an option. My RE is the only one within a 3hr drive so basically I'm stuck with educating myself as much as possible and being my own advocate. There were 2 REs at the clinic when I first started, and I actually originally started out with a different one, but he retired and he never suggested the HSG either. So now there's one RE with twice the case load. Joy. I will definitely bring up getting one at my next appt.

DH did say today that if our RE didn't get his sh!t together, we'd make the 3hr drive to Dallas and find a new one there. :)
