maternity clothes or not to maternity clothes... that is the question

I am almost 14 weeks and most of my pants do not fit.  I have a couple pairs of pants that were either baggy to begin with or a size bigger than what I use to wear, that still fit now.  I'm trying to decide if I should buy several pants a size up and wear those for a few weeks... or if I should just go for maternity pants.  What is everyone's opinions?

  • Have you tried a Bella Band?  I have a few and they allow me to still able to wear my PP jeans/pants comfortably until its time to break out the maternity clothes!

  • I am almost 18 weeks and when I cant fit in my pants comfortably I am going to use my bella band until I need maternity pants.

This is my 3rd pregnancy and with #2 I didnt need maternity pants until week 23

I would do a bella band and then maternity pants

  • I started off using belly bands because I wanted to keep wearing my pants but the problem I had was that the pants wouldn't stay up. I was constantly pulling up my pants. In the last two weeks I switched to maternity pants and I'm loving them!!!

I wouldn't suggest buying jeans a bigger size only becuase then in a few weeks you will have to buy more pants! Then after the pregnancy you probably won't fit in them. Just make the leap and by the maternity pants, you will love them!

  • I've never understood people's aversion to maternity clothing. It's not like you're just gaining weight, you're pregnant. Maternity pants are very comfortable and really help to support your bump if you get the full panel. Unless you are one of the very few people that can wear regular pants the entire pregnancy, you will need maternity pants eventually so you might as well get them sooner rather than later.

Although I'm kind of anti-bella band. The last thing I want around my waist when I'm bloated and/or expanding is a tight piece of fabric.

  • I have tried a belly band, but with jeans it is just uncomfortable.  With any other pants they feel fine.  But when I'm not at work, I'm always in jeans.  This is my first pregnancy... and I don't feel mentally ready for maternity clothes.  But I guess my growing belly is just a good sign of my growing baby!

THIS- I have been confused by this bump ? for quite a while now, you are obviously going to end up in maternity pants so why not just get them and be comfortable.  They also look a lot better IMO then buying a size up does because they fit properly all over.  They grow in the belly where you need it...

  • And can someone tell me how to get a countdown thing on my post... and take off my name my post?
  • I switched to maternity clothes at 6 weeks. I was so bloated...everything made me feel fat and ugly. I say go for it! I can't believe anyone is still hanging onto their regular clothes at 14 weeks!!
  • I just purchased my first items of maternity clothing last week at 23 weeks and I absolutely love them!  The jeans I purchased are a little too loose I think still but will work great for when I get bigger in the coming weeks and the shirts are incredible cute and comfy.  If it weren't for my husband insisting that we go shopping for maternity clothes, I wouldn't have made the move over to the relaxed and comfy wardrobe I now have.  I totally recommend grabbing a couple of pairs of maternity pants and skirts - you will definitely need them after giving birth because it takes a little while to lose the baby weight and maternity pants are a great way to transition to your post-baby body.

Agreed, so much more comfortable. At least try one pair to start with.

  • So far I've gone for leggings and loose tops.  This may not get me through the entire pregnancy but I've been very comfortable the last month and have not purchased anything I could not wear later.

Yes! An acquaintance gave me a big bag full of maternity pants (prior to this I figured I would just try to make it through by buying larger clothes) and I tried a pair on at 15 weeks and I basically haven't looked back. For me spending money on clothes that I was only going to wear for a maybe half a year seemed silly but I was completely wrong. They fit better and make me feel better about the way I look. I look pregnant rather than like I'm trying to wear a sack. Also, I tried the belly bands and did not like them at all. It's so nice to feel comfortable! Also, dresses are fabulous because they don't squeeze your middle at all. I'm definitely going to buy a couple more dresses.

I'm still wearing my regular jeans and doing the rubber band trick on the button.  I got one pair of maternity jeans from Old Navy because they were cheap, but they don't fit too great.  I feel like I'm always pulling them up, and they seem a little baggy around the front pockets.  They also get baggy in the butt after I wear them awhile.

I'm holding out for some better maternity jeans once I'm a little bigger.  I like some from the Gap, but for them to fit me like I want, I would need to go down a size.  And I'm not sure I want to do that if I'm going to get bigger.  I've been wearing black yoga pants too and dressing them up.

  • I am in the same boat... some of my pants fit but others, like jeans, don't.  So I bought a Beband at Target and I can wear my jeans!  I have some maternity clothes from a friend but they don't quite fit yet, especially the pants.  Whatever is comfy, go with that!
