Anyone's LO need dental sedation?

DS2 (almost 2 years) finally saw the dentist during a regular biannual cleaning after chipping his tooth a few months ago.  I called the day he chipped his tooth but they stated they didn't need to see him and didn't need any treatment.  The hygentist told me prior to seeing the dentist that she didn't think it needed any treatment (IherO being a mom of 5 and professionally) however the dentist stated we needed a referral to a specialist (only 2 in town), one that will be able to sedate either "oral conscious sedation" or general anesthesia. They'd like Xrays and a possible filling done on the tooth def Xrays to see how close to the nerve the chip is.  DS2 fought the dentist hard today.  He didn't like his teeth cleaned and even bit down on her.  (She didn't handle 2 year olds well though).  I am curious (we have dental insurance):1. How much does it cost?  Was it covered by insurance? I will probably find out more about this at the consultation.2.  How did DC do?  I am worried a bit. He's so little.  3.  If you are a dental professional, do you think its necessary the work be done.  The tooth hasn't changed colors but it at least 1/3 chipped away maybe even up to 1/2 the tooth gone. I am questioning it as I wasn't impressed by the dentist (rotating pedi dental office--never had her before) and I have had two non-professionals say no work.

Re: Anyone's LO need dental sedation?

  • We got the oral sedation stuff. Came in a syringe an dLO sucked it down.

    1) Paid $125 Out of pocket for the sedation. It was not covered on our dental insurance but it is possibly covered under our health insurance. I had to send in a request for reimbursement. That's still pending. We have CHIP insurance, and sometimes they will cover the sedation and sometimes they won't. The person I spoke to couldn't give me details on specifics.

    2) LO did fine, It was over before I could even work up a good cry. She fractured a tooth at 22 months into three pieces so it all had to come out. I insisted on the sedation even though dentist said it wasn't necessary, just convenient. Hardest part for us was the drinking/diet restrictions afterwards. LO could not suck on anything, not even the sippy cups for a week afterwards. Mood wise, LO was lazy the rest of the day and I ended up putting her in a diaper for the first 3-4 hours after getting home since LO was still too sedated to walk. I figured the PT was completely wiped from her memory while sedated. We kept LO quiet for the day because even though the sedation had mostly worn off, she was still wobbly and in general acting a bit off. We watched a lot of movies that day.

    3) I'm not a professional but I know our nurse line's deciding factor on whether or not we saw the ER doctor, and also the ER's deciding to see a dentist was that when we looked at the tooth we could see the red dot that's in the center of the tooth. It wasn't blood because really that tooth didn't bleed at all, but we had cracked all the way through and exposed the nerves. Specifically the ER doctor said to "Kiss that tooth good bye"

ETA: I did call around for a second opinion and spoke to the pediatric dentist that our family used (he wasn't on CHIP though). He agreed that the tooth had to come out and that sedation was optional. Standard procedure was to sedate and the numb that tooth/gum. Both times I did speak with a pediatric dentist. Not anyone else.

  • DS also cracked a tooth and the dentist thought it would be fine. A few months later DS seemed to be in more pain, so we took him in again.  They scheduled an appt with him being sedated; however the appt was a month or so out.  The tooth got progressively worse, so we took him in to have it extracted.  At that point all they would do was laughing gas and numbing his mouth.  DS did fantastic, but I give most of the credit to the dentist.  He was a pediatric dentist and so awesome with DS.  I think we paid $90 maybe.  Personally, if you have a pediatric dentist you trust I would just follow their recommendations.  I was definitely nervous, but it turned out fine in the end. Good luck.

  • I'm a dental assistant and have also worked in pedi dental. Sometimes a small incisal (biting edge) chip can be left alone, or simply smoothed out. But if its a large chunk of the tooth missing, I would definitely have treatment done for it. That is a tooth that your LO will prob have for at least 3 more years, so it could definitely end up causing him some problems, even down the road if not right away. If the nerve is exposed, or becomes exposed with more wear, it could possibly lead to infection or cause problems with his permanent tooth that will eventually replace it.

  • thanks, I am going to make his consult appointment tomorrow and find out more.  I am now worried that we are going to have to give up the paci with this work.  I am not ready and I know he isn't either : ( (He's my BABY--last child...its different)

Ah, I see. HHHS co 03, lol. Go Knights! My grandparents on both sides were military so my parents got stuck here, and my FIL was military so that brought DH to the area. Killeen is just awful now, I hate having to go there for anything. Where did you move to?
