My Midwife Doesn't Want to See Me Until 12 Weeks!?!?

So, this is my first pregnancy and I am naturally a bit type A so obviously I am a little neurotic about everything pregnancy/baby related :).

I have decided to go to a midwifery in my area that my sister-in-law has used on all 3 of her babies and highly recommends. I spoke with them about setting up my first appointments and they don't do the first actual appointment until 12 weeks where they would look for a heartbeat and such. She actually said I could come in as early as 9 weeks but they can't always here the heartbeats that early.

I am seeing posts on here about women getting 8wk appointments and hearing the heartbeat...what was your experience???? Any advice on this??? I could actually go to my regular gyno to get one earlier but would have to pay for it...I think they run about $100-$150 per u/s.

  • I think it is worth it to wait. We had an early U/S when I thought I was 8 weeks and I ended up measureing at 5 weeks and could not find a heartbeat. We then had to wait, which was dreadful, to only get the news that were miscarrying. I will never go to an early u/s again.

With his pregnancy, my first appt. is tomorrow and I should be 11 weeks.

I understand it is hard to wait but ,in my opinion, I'd rather wait instead of being stuck in limbo.

  • My OB's office won't see me until 8-10 weeks and no ultrasound until the anatomy scan as long as all goes well until then. DH wants to tell on FB after our first appt next week but I want to wait until I can at least hear a heartbeat. I feel your frustration but I am just trying to be thankful that I have had no reason to need to be seen any earlier :)

  • I agree with PP. I felt exactly like you with my first pregnancy and went in fairly early and ended up with a huge scare that left me thinking I was going to miscarry but didn't. I don't think there is a problem with going in early but with this pregnancy, since I am not high risk, I will not be going in until 11-12 weeks by my own choice. I think the U/S is better and chance of hearing the heartbeat is much better. Just my choice though.

  • Unless you are having problems or have a history of m/c most OB/MW's won't see you until you are 10-12 weeks.  I wasn't seen until 10 wks with #1 and my first of 2 ultrasounds was at 14 wks then at 35 wks.

  • My OB doesn't see folks for the first appointment with U/S until 10-13 weeks.  I think that's pretty normal unless you have a history of complications or losses.  The only appointment I have had so far is the "orientation to the clinic" appointment with a nurse which consisted of ordering lab work, medical and family history, and information on what to expect as far as time line of appointments goes.  I was able to schedule my 10 week appointment at that time.

  • I had my first appointment at 6w and she didn't schedule me again until 12w because she felt 10w was too early to hear the HB and she didn't want me to be disappointed. I bought a Doppler and found the HB in my own. It was reassuring to me.

  • Thank you so much for all of the replies...I will try to chill out ;).

  • I had my first appointment at 10 weeks and we saw the baby through ultrasound. I had to go back the next week for something and we heard the heartbeat on the doppler at 11 weeks... she said it was hit or miss though because at that point the baby is small enough to "hide".

  • No need to worry. I was so nervous with my first that I posted an identical post to yours last year. My midwife would not see me until 12 weeks either. It felt like the longest wait but, it is best to wait. I know it is hard, but just let that baby keep growing. I won't see my midwife this time until 13 weeks when she is back from holiday. Best luck.

  • My first appointment thus tie around is at 9 wks 4 days, which is preferable to 6 wks 5 days like my last pregnancy (my first pregnancy was 18 weeks-didn't get a bfp until 14 weeks). It was so nerve wracking. I don't recommend going in early.

  • FWIW With my 1st pregnancy due to a bunch of stuff I didn't have my first appt til 14 weeks! I felt the same way you did...but everything was fine.

The OB I'm currently going with (trying to decide between OB and midwives for VBAC...) won't see me til 11.5 weeks. 12 really isn't that late.

I had midwifery care for most of my first pregnancy and I think you'll find it is a lot different than more medicalized care, but it is also a lot better. It takes some getting used to since we're all used to how doctor's work, but midwives are amazing women and KNOW pregnancy and birth.
