Baby Names

Would I be completely insane if...

Would I be completely insane to name a daughter Isla since the baby's last name will begin with P? And if the obvious answer is yes, should I just bite the bullet on spelling and switch to Ayla, which I think is pronounced the same? I really like the sound of the name, it's familiar without being common...but something about "Ayla" looks funny to me as opposed to "Isla."

  • I may be wrong but I thought Isla was pronounced Eye-luh....and Ayla is like Kayla but without e "K". (Ay-luh)

  • Haha I wouldn't have thought of that. But I would still go with Isla over Ayla. If it bothers you, I would honestly just pick a different name.

We knew DS's middle name would be Irving and our last name starts with a C, so we immediately eliminated several first initials... I didn't want our poor baby's initials to be DIC, LIC, PIC, etc. I know where you're coming from.

  • I'm not getting the Isla & P thing. However, I pronounce Ayla with a long A and Isla with an "eye" at the beginning, so they don't sound the same to me. I don't think it's just me. Every Ayla I've ever met (all of them Israeli) pronounce it "Aye-luh."

Isla and Ayla are both pronounced EYE-luh.  And OP, I much prefer the Isla spelling and don't think the initials (if that's what you're asking about) would even register as odd to most people.  Because they're not.

ETA: I don't know any Hebrew Aylas.  A little googling shows that it's typically pronounced AY-luh, but that the English pronunciation is like Isla.

I have no idea what would be wrong with that....apparently I am missing something?

I think because her initials would be IP (like I pee). That's how I read it.

    Ayla is NOT pronounced EYE-Luh

  • It took me a while to figure out the I.P. initals issue. I don't think it would be bad at all. And I am usually the one who can think up the easy and far reaching ways to make fun of names.

I would only second guess myself on it if your last name was Freely and you wanted to name her Isla Penelope. (I.P. Freely)

I based the original comment off one person I know who does pronounce it as Isla.  I amended the comment after reading about the Hebrew name.

  • Gah, I assumed they did but enough of you are saying they don't, I'll take your word for it.

And yes, the issue was having initials "I.P." which I think as an adult wouldn't matter, but I'm uncertain if kids would latch on to it and use it to make up some silly song or something in school. Then again, I don't recall how aware of last names I was when young.

  • I didn't even get the "I.P." - I thought you were worried about Isla P. looking like "I slap."

I personally thought Isla was pronounced Ees-la, so I'm even further out of the loop, but, for what it's worth, I would pronounce "Ayla" with a long a, like rhyming with Kayla.

  • I didn't get the IP thing at all. I actually think IP address, as in computers. Ha.

I had the initials EW growing up. No one ever made fun of me for it. I really don't think it's a big deal.

I definitely pronounce these names differently. Isla is EYE-luh, Ayla is A-luh.

  • I went to school with an Ayla from 1st grade to hs and still friends with her. It's pronounced exactly the same as Isla

  • pisla.

    you're not getting pissla.

    anywho. go with ayla

  • I have a cousin Ayla who pronounces it EYE-lah.  Her mother is Turkish, so perhaps there are different pronounciations for different cultures.

  • I thought of "intended parents" but I think that is just because I have a lot of friends who are surrogate mothers.. lol. I highly doubt the younger population would pick up on that , and it is a lovely name ((I also prefer the isla ))

I just thought of computers too and didn't get what was wrong with that... I only got it when I read other people's answers

  • The initials didn't even occur to me.

  • All right, then, I think it's going to be Isla. Now to convince my SO...he is sold on Lily despite my telling him there will be a million other girls named Lily!
