Am I crazy?

I see so many posts about not taking the baby out of the house for a couple of months or letting them be around people etc. I don't plan to be like this, I plan to let people come meet the baby and I'm even throwing an anniversary party for my parents a few weeks after the baby (not at my house) and so he'll be around a lot of people there, I plan to bring him to work so people can meet him etc.

Do I want people who are sick to touch and kiss him? No of course not, but I feel like having people use hand sanitizer when/if touching him is fine and asking people who are sick to keep their distance.

Should I plan to be more protective?

Re: Am I crazy?

  • I don't think you are crazy. I plan to get out after about two weeks. Mostly I'm factoring how much time it will take me to recover and want to be out and about. I know that different cultures have strong opinions. My Korean friends don't leave the house for months after they have their babies. I think I would go crazy!

  • We went out right away with both kids, but they were Summer babies. I can see being more cautious with a baby born in the Winter. We don't have much choice with this one though. My other kids have school and activities that can't be avoided. She'll be carted around everywhere :)

  • I am of the opinion that the more people are germ freaks, with their newborns and in general life, the more they are sick. You need to be exposed to germs to build antibodies and when people put themselves in a bubble they end up unable to tolerate illness and allergies.

Of course, I won't let obviously sick people around the baby but I have no intention of hiding ourselves away.

  • Nope not crazy, we took DS out to dinner with us twice in his first two weeks. I had gotten a little stir crazy from being stuck at the hospital 4 days, he had nasty jaundice hence the long stay. Between that and the determination not to be like my brother who's DD's were almost never out of the house, I figured that germs were gonna be around, and that was ok.

But i'm super low key, and kiddo is super healthy, i think if he had any medical issues i'd be more worried about it.

  • I don't think you're crazy at all... I figure the first week or so we'll just stay home and obviously going to keep sick people at a distance but I don't see the point in staying home and not seeing people at all unless you're in an area w/ bad flu outbreaks.

  • I'm with you after the first 2 weeks with my kiddos we were out and about, then again they are spring and late summer baby's. this one will be in the dead of winter here so this time might be different.

  • I refuse to barricade myself and my baby in the house and not allow anyone to come over. I'll be more conscious of what I do, but if family and friends want to come over, that's great. I also plan on taking walks outside (with her BUNDLED up) so I can get back to my pre-pregnancy weight sooner.

  • I can't imagine staying in the house that long. How do you get groceries, pick up your dry cleaning, go to Starbucks? You know, the important stuff.

I'm not planning on taking the baby to very crowded places, but I certainly hope I'll be feeling well enough to get out and about.

It's also been a very mild winter here so far. If it lasts, I certainly plan to do walks around the neighborhood.

  • I have never been much of a germaphobe and I too said the same thing before I had my DD.  But as soon as she was born I was really protective and annoyed when people (especially dirty little kids) tried to touch her and kiss her all over her face.  You may find that you become more protective than you think when your baby actually comes.  And you don't "plan" on being more protective, you just will be!

But that said, staying indoors for so long does sound awful. My DD was born in July so I went out to take walks and stuff with her after a few weeks.  But this time DD will be born in Jan. in the cold so we will probably avoid going out much just because it's cold and a PITA.  I have no problem with people visiting, but I don't like little kids touching the baby.
