Induction at 37 weeks

Hello,

I am wondering why twins are induced at 37 weeks?  When I first started out I never thought I would make it but now that it is approaching I am wondering why they induce twins so early? I go for my growth scan this Friday and they plan to set a date for me at 37 weeks for induction (if I don't go before). I am wondering if I have no signs of labor and everything looks good why I couldn't go longer. I do plan on talking to my dr. about this on Friday but just wanted some insight. Thanks.

Re: Induction at 37 weeks

  • you need to ask your doc why.  That's not common.... most docs will have twins go to 38 or 39 weeks as long as there are no problems. My hospital won't schedule a delivery before 38w for twins, unless medically necessary.

are there any issues with your babies that would require them to come earlier?

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • Ask your doc. Our MFM would have let them go as far as 38 w but preferred 37w for various outcome/complication related reasons. We only made it to 35w, so it never was really an issue of debate though.
  • it depends on your doctor, but ih ave also been told it depends on what kind of twins you are carrying, di/di can often go longer from what i understand, mo/di they start to worry about the placenta.... but i'm not there yet, so we will see what the doctors say when i get closer, so far i have heard 36 weeks, and 38 weeks....

  • my MFM would absolutely not let me go to 39 weeks.  i think he prefers 37 weeks but will let me go to 38 if i can make it.

it just has to do with potential complications with the babies that arise more with twins and things "expiring" earlier with twins like the uterus and placenta/s.

  • I wouldn't agree to it before 39 weeks. I'd go in for nst if necessary.
  • My OB is scheduling me for a c-section at 38 weeks, but said he's open to delivering at 37 too...he said that twins mature faster than singletons, so they are ready a bit earlier.  Just as you would worry about a singleton pregnancy last 41 weeks, you worry about a twin pregnancy going past 38-39 weeks.

  • Had I not had complications that necessitated delivery at 35w, my c/s (breech presenting twin) was scheduled for 38w3d. My OB would rather keep them in as long as possible, barring other complications.

  • Yeah, that isn't common.  I had to BEG for an induction and then do a lung maturity amnio before they would schedule anything before 38 week.

I really wanted the babies out at 37 weeks bc I am very small and was very uncomfortable at that point.  Since the babies were over 6 pounds and lungs were mature I got over my guilt and went for the early induction.  The babies were perfectly healthy, born at 37w3d.  BUT!  If you think you can keep going, God bless you and keep them baking! :)  Definitely talk to your Dr about it.

  • We induced at 37w1d. I didn't deliver until 37w3d. I had carpal tunnel although I'm not sure that had any bearing. It was a very good thing we induced because once I delivered baby A it was apparent that baby B wasn't the size they expected. I had undiagnosed IUGR. So, I'm very glad to have been induced early.
  • I had my scheduled c/s at 38wk1d and my OB would even schedule it before 38 wks since I had no complications or issues.  If you don't have a medical reason I'd try to hold off until 38 weeks.
  • Thank you ladies. The twins are mono/di so i believe that is why they are pushing for 37 weeks. I am going to try to hold out until 38 weeks if all looks well...but I might not even get to make that decision these boys might do it for me!

Ah, that makes sense. Mine were di/di and we scheduled my induction for 37w6d. (I'm weird but I wanted their birthday to be on the 6th instead of the 7th. Sometimes I regret that though because it would be so much easier to just say "38 weeks"; they were only 3 hrs short of it ;)).

Ah, that's it. That makes sense to me, and I think it's great that your doctor is comfortable with you delivering them vaginally.

From what my MFM told me they usually like to take mo/di around 36 weeks, so you're getting another week cushion.  Mine were born at 36 weeks 3 days- c-section.

For mo/di I wouldn't wait until 38 weeks if your doctor isn't comfortable.  I'd keep the 37.  They're concerned about the placenta deteriorating since two babies are using it.

  • Mine were induced at 37 weeks too, but because of pre-e.  Otherwise we'd have gone longer.

Your situation sounds like your docs are looking out for you and the boys and what's best.  Just keep the dialogue open with your doc so everyone is comfortable!
