Late Term and Child Loss

Heaven is for real by Todd Burpo

I suffered a miscarriage July 2010 and did not heal/cope with our loss.  I read this book and it brought me out of my funk immediately! I ran around recommending it to everyone!  It's about a little boy who died and went to Heaven.  He told his parents later all about things that a child at that age would not learn in Sunday school.  He even met his little sister in Heaven, the result of a miscarriage that his mom and dad never told him about due to his very young age! This book is based on a true story.

I got pregnant this past February and was due on November 20, 2011. At 40w1d, I gave birth to our first daughter, she was stillborn.  Even if you aren't a Christian, I believe this is a great book for anyone to read that has suffered loss.  I honestly think that if I wouldn't have read this book before I got pregnant again, I would not be in the mental state of acceptance with our second loss.

Just thought I'd share.

  • I have debated and debated reading this...But someone told me to read the shack a few months after Kam passed and I got to the scene where they found the cabin and the father is talking about his guilt ad I lost it.

Like couldn't breathe, nearly had a panic attack, lost it..I am afraid to do it again..Is it the same type of story?? Have you read both?

  • My neighbor just got me both those books to read. I'm starting on heaven is for real for now. Hopefully it doesn't make cry too much.

  • I haven't heard of that one but this other is really sweet and uplifting. I found a copy at our local Target. They were on Today a while back telling their story but I missed it. Here is what Amazon had written about it:

Heaven Is for Real is the true story of the four-year old son of a small town Nebraska pastor who during emergency surgery slips from consciousness and enters heaven. He survives and begins talking about being able to look down and see the doctor operating and his dad praying in the waiting room. The family didn't know what to believe but soon the evidence was clear.

Colton said he met his miscarried sister whom no one had told him about, and his great grandfather who died 30 years before Colton was born, then shared impossible-to-know details about each. He describes the horse that only Jesus could ride, about how "reaaally big" God and his chair are, and how the Holy Spirit "shoots down power" from heaven to help us.

Told by the father but often in Colton's own words, the disarmingly simple message is heaven is a real place, Jesus really loves children, and be ready there is a coming last battle.

I have read Heaven is for Real and only part of The Shack, but I think they are very different. I'm not saying Heaven is for Real won't make you cry, but I think you'll find it comforting.

  • I read The Shack a few years ago and liked it, but would not think to recommend it to someone with a loss. I read Heaven is for Real a few months ago, and I agree, it was comforting and well written.

I've read both, and IMO they are very different.  The Shack was very sad to me, and Heaven is for Real was more uplifting (not sure if that's really the right word, but anyway).

  • I read both.  Someone literally pushed a copy of Heaven is for Real into my Hands at my son Calebs funeral.  I read it the next day, cried but found it VERY healing.

At my moms suggestion she lent me The Shack, afterwards, Very Dark, I also cried in certain spots.  Its a different kind of book about loss.  Both are very good for very different reasons.

Heaven is for Real is very uplifting and I have recommended it to everyone in group.  I loved it.
