Vent about nurses

I think I've called my OB's office one time other than today when I was having contractions.  Today would be the 2nd time during this pregnancy that I have called.  I have MAJOR swelling that popped up last night and I almost passed out and have been dizzy all day.  So I figured today it would be a good idea to call them and get checked to make sure I'm ok.

This nurse had such an attitude and had to let me know that they would squeeze me in just to be nice but that I probably ate too much salt.  You know what, yeah, I bet the ham I ate this week had something to do with it but it's still worth checking out.

I feel like I have been a really low maintenance patient and the two times I have been worried they made me feel like an idiot.   ugh.

Re: Vent about nurses

  • Tell your OB about it.  You're at the end of a twin pregnancy, NO ONE at the doc's office should give you crap.  They should be bending over backwards to make sure you are healthy IMO!

  • I hear you about doctor's offices! I had trouble 2 weeks ago when I was bleeding. Waited 2 hours to schedule an appointment and had to call twice. NOT ACCEPTABLE for an urgent issue. Regardless if you ate too much salt, a multiple pregnancy is usually high risk and any problems should be addressed as soon as possible.

I started to get bad swelling right at the point you are (32w) and my blood pressure would SOMETIMES get elevated. I was put on bed rest to prevent pre-eclampsia and 4 weeks later I delivered!

I would call and complain to a supervisor tomorrow. I did that after my fiasco 2 weeks ago and got a handwritten note a few days later with 2 movie tickets.

  • Sorry, she made you feel that way:(    Maybe she got coal this year.   I think you did the right thing.   I hope your appt goes well, keep us updated.  Better to be safe than sorry.

  • I'm also low maintenance, around 31/32 weeks. About 5 weeks ago, I had a horrible sore throat, can't-swallow-type of sore throat. It was a Saturday and it had been persisting for 3-4 days. But on the last day I decided I'd taken everything I could for it, and besides it was localized (one side only) so I know that it wasn't strep. I started to wonder if I had an injury or something!

I called the on-call doc and explained briefly what was going on. He told me to go to the ER. It was more of a brush off than anything. I told him that I didn't think they would know what to do in the ER and would probably end up calling him anyhow. He snapped, "Do you think I'd be in this line of business if I had a cure for every viral infection in the world?" I admit I was a bit punchy, but I said, "So you think it's a viral infection? What can they do for that in the ER?" He said, "Listen. If I knew what to do about a viral infection, do you think I'd be doing this? Here? No. I'd have it made in Manhattan!" That was it for me. I said with a laugh, "Do you really think I'd be calling an on-call doctor on a Saturday if I thought I only had a viral infection?" I then asked him if he thought it could be a sore from acid reflux. He quickly changed his tune and said that it was likely the culprit. He told me to take OTC Pepcid AC and wha-la! Problem solved within a day.

Sometimes it's good to dish it right back. They're in the business of babies--unpredictable, round the clock care, babies. You're not an inconvenience and this is the one time when you should not apologize for needing a check in once in awhile.

  • And P.S. It's just insulting that she told you that you probably ate too much salt. I would have answered her with a big laugh and "Well, DUH!" and continued to press for the appointment and attention you needed.

  • Too many medical professionals seem to miss the research that shows that salt intake doesn't usually equate to water retention/swelling in pregnancy.

I would complain to the office manager and OB. That's BS, especially at this stage in your pregnancy.

  • I am a nurse in the hospital, and I am shocked at how rude the nurses have been to us at our fertility and high risk OB appointments.  I have called a few times with issues, and they never give me a great answer to my questions, and always act annoyed.  I ask them if they would rather me go into the ER where I work and know everyone, and know that I would receive good care, and they tell me no.  I guess even if they are rude, you should call anyways, since you are the mother and need to protect yourself and your baby.  I hope things go better for you from here on out, and at least we will only have to deal with these rude nurses temporarily.

  • and im tired of people making excuses for them..."oh they have a thousand phone calls" or "oh they have to deal with a ton of bitchy women"or "oh, they are understaffed".  ....suck it up.  everyone is dealing with crap in this economy, especially if they are in the working world.  my husband works his ass off and has to deal with sh*t everyday, and no way could he get away with the attitude some of these nurses possess.
