We have a door in the kitcen that leads to the basement. But first it leads to slippery, wooden stairs of death. I'm terrified Ellie will fall down them now that she's semi-mobile. I check the door approx 50 million times a day and if I hear her little hands slapping on the wood floor in the kitchen I sprint to check it again. Unfortunately it opens toward the stairs so if it was left cracked she could push it open to fall down the stairs. It's ruining my life.
We put a sliding chain lock thingy on it so that even it if is left cracked open she can't push it open. I want to put a gate in front of it but I know I'll forget and fall to my death when I trip on it. I'm not sure what to do to ease my mind.

Don't they make some sort of plastic contraption that locks the door knob to make it child-proof? I don't know, something like that.
Oh hi, popping in from my lurkdom of doom.
She hasn't figured out the door knob, but those do exist. My fear is one of us leaving the door ajar and her falling to her death. Our laundry room and dog kennels are in the basement so we go down there several times a day. We close and lock the door when we come back up but there have been slip ups. It just terrifies me.
Well, babygates come up to my knees, at the least my shins. How on earth will you forget about the gate and trip on it? I say go with the baby gates and WATCH WHERE YOU'RE GOING. Geez. Good luck.
I want you to come up with an idea like installing a curly slid with a bounce mat at the bottom. And then fund it.
My thought is to install hinges that will turn the door into a self closing door. You obviously want to do some research on that. The other option doesn't change the hinges:

Clearly the smartest person on TB.
I was going to suggest a bungee cord at the top of the door to pull it closed.
Clearly, I'm a bit redneck.
