Spotting followed by normal period: What is the first day

This is my first post here on the bump, but I am really racking my brain trying to figure out an answer to this question.

 

My husband and I are currently trying to conceive.  We have been tracking my cycle since I went off the pill in October, and I have averaged 25 days (same as before I went on the pill).  This month I was "supposed" to start on the 26th of Dec.  I began spotting on Dec 21, this continued until Dec 26 when my normal (heavy) flow began.  I am wondering, to track ovulation for this next cycle, what is day 1?  The 21 (my mom thinks so) or the 26?  If I use the 21, it says my fertile window is the 28-Jan 2.  Knowing that my periods usually last 6 or so days I will still be bleeding at this time.  Does this mean that we will not be able to get pregnant this cycle, or do I count the 26th as the first day, therefore making my fertile days later on (likely after my bleeding has stopped).

    CD 1 would be Dec 26...your first day of flow that requires a pad/tampon.

    The first day of your cycle is the first day of heavy red blood, not the spotting, sometimes brown blood.  So, it sounds like your first day is th 26 of Dec.  You should also try OPKs if you don't already.  They take some of the guess work out of it.  It also tells you when to start testing based on how many days your cycle usually is.  Hope this helps.  GL.

    Thanks Ladies for the advice, I will use the 26th date as CD1, and we were already planning on trying the OPKs this cycle, just to be sure.  Also, thanks for directing me to the newbie post.  The info there was very helpful as well.
