Toddlers: 24 Months+

Moms of 2+ of the same gender...

How often do you have to buy new clothes for LO 2? We just found out that we are having another boy, and we have all of DS1's clothes, which are in pretty good shape for the most part...just curious how often you have to buy or if they wear all hand-me-downs...

Re: Moms of 2+ of the same gender...

  • One was winter, one was summer.  Infant stuff just needed some preemie stuff for #2...Around 12 months the size/season made a difference.  By 18 months DD#2 was VERY girly and #1 was cool with jeans and hand-me downs so now at 2 DD#2 has practically a completely different wardrobe even though she and #1 can now wear the same size except foor pants.

  • DS#1 was an April baby and DS#2 was a March baby so the only things I have bought for DS2 is a few special things: coming home outfit, halloween/christmas shirt. Other than that he has hand me downs from DS1

  • DSs are 2 years and 1 month apart.  I have been able to reuse most of DS #1 clothes because they are the same age during the same seasons if that makes sense.  I haven't bought a lot of clothes, blankets or toys.  Some of DS#1 shirts were pretty stained for this season, so I bought a few new onsies.  We've also gotten a lot of new clothes from their grandmas.

  • My son wears hand me downs, I only buy for the older one, unless theres a really good deal on something

  • DDs are 2.5 years apart, so all of DD1's 6 month clothes were for summer, and DD2 will be 6 months in Feb, so needed a lot of stuff.  I love shopping for them, so I don't mind!

  • DS1 is tiny and DS2 is huge.  DS2 started to be able to wear hand me downs at about 18-24 months.

  • DD2 was born a pound and a half bigger than DD1.  She is wearing all her hand-me-downs and I just buy a few new things.  She is already wearing 6-9 month clothes.  DD1 wore newborn size clothing for about 3 months, so I think their seasons are just going to be a bit off.  As of right now I'm not able to buy ahead like I do with DD1.

  • Mine were born the same season (march and feb), so DS2 wears all hand-me-downs from DS1.  He has gotten a few new things, for specific events or gifts from others.  He gets a lot of new socks now, and eventually will need new pants because DS1 wore out the knees in the bigger sizes.  I did pick out a new going home outfit and sometimes get matching clothes for them, plus a few little brother shirts.  But mostly his wardrobe is all from DS1.

  • My boys were Sept and Jan but DS2 is able to wear DS1 clothes, some don't match up (season) but others do.

  • DS1 was an early September baby and DS2 was a late May baby.  We've had to suppliment a few things.  Like right now DS2 is starting in 6-9 clothes and DS1 was in 6-9 clothes in summer so I have and will have to buy a few winter items to keep up.  Mostly pants and stuff though.  Onsies can be used for layering which is always nice.

Some things overlap a bit but not a lot.  I'm a huge fan of Once Upon a Child and other consignment shops.

  • Both my DD's are born in April, so you would think DD1's clothes would pass down to DD2.  Nope.  DD2 is ginormous.  She's much longer (had 4 inches over DD1 at birth) about 10 lbs heavier and a big head. At 8 months, she's in 18 mo clothing -which the hand-me-down clothes were for the summer season.  So to answer your question-I have to buy new clothes every season.  I made the mistake of hitting Carters at the end of the summer season sale and stocking up for next yr.  Well those clothes will remained unworn as I purchased the wrong size. I wasted a lot of money.

  • So far we've only purchased some seasonal stuff that is warm in NB sizes because DS #1 was as summer baby. I had to get a bunting thing and a few warm hats and sleepers. Other than that we just layer the clothes and add blankets to the lighter weight stuff that DS#1 used. I suspect we won't have to buy much because we don't have very extreme seasons here, so a lot of the clothes can be layered or unlayered depending on season.
