Eating ?

Do you feed them earlier than them being hungry in order to get them in bed earlier?

I have 2 options when I get off work. Feed them at 5:30 at my moms or wait until 6 when I get home. I would prefer to wait until 6 but then I am thinking they wouldn't want to eat again until 9 & I really want them in the bed by then.

At what point does that last feeding go away & they go to bed earlier than that?

Re: Eating ?

  • At about 2.5 or 3 months we started making the 6:00 feed the last one.  It did mean that there was a 3 am feeding for a while longer but we could tell they really didn't want to get back up for the 9pm feeding anyway.  By 4 months they were sleeping 12 hours (6-6).

  • A lot of people either Love or Hate this book, so don't shoot the messenger, but you might find "Babywise" helpful. It talks a lot about scheduling mealtimes and how babies who are scheduled rest better and get what the author calls "full feedings" instead of "snacking" throughout the day. My babies aren't due for another month (fingers crossed) so I can't attest to how well the program works. Just from asking around though, the reaction is either fierce defensiveness and upset to It-saved-my-life reactions. To each their own. We are going to try it and if it doesn't fit our lifestyle, not get hung up on it and do our own thing. It's a fast read; I read it in two nights, but could have read it in one. I wish you luck.

Exactly the same with my girls.  Lily would STTN (6pm-7am) while Hannah was getting up at 3-4am for awhile.  But it wasn't bad with just one baby waking!  But they eventually just dropped them on their own and slept longer.

Do either of you recall how many ounces they were taking in when they were able to do this or do you think that has anything to do with it?

Also, did you do baths before that 6pm feeding or feed, bath & then bed?

  • hmmm.. I can't remember how many ounces, sorry!  But honestly I don't think it is about ounces.

We did baths every other night, before the bottle.  After the bottle we just swaddled, put them in cribs and turned on soothers and a sound machine.  Very low key "routine".

Not sure if you've read it, like it, or hate it...but we read BabyWise and it really helped us a lot with figuring out things like schedules and routines.
