Fleece sensitivity?

LO has had a rash on his chest for a long time. His NP says it's contact dermatitis. I've tried everything to get rid of it: aquaphor, baby powder, cornstarch, calendula cream, baking soda in the bath, oatmeal bath, Desitin, Cetaphil for atopic skin, changing the detergent we use, doing an extra rinse on the baby laundry...

I just realized that he's been wearing fleece PJs every night for months. Tonight I put him in some fleece pants I just made for him and by bath time, 2 hours later, his legs were starting to look red and blotchy like his chest.

Is a fleece allergy possible?  I feel like I've seen someone post about this on here but I don't remember who. If it's you, please give me your input! I REALLY want to get to the bottom of this. Poor baby has been living with this for way too long. TIA!

Re: Fleece sensitivity?

  • I think an allergy/sensitivity to anything is possible but I think the easiest way to tell is to take him out of the fleece and see if his skin gets better.

  • Yup, I agree with you. I switched him to cotton PJs tonight with a cotton sleep sack. I'll probably have to try that for a couple of weeks to know for sure. Crossing my fingers to have put my finger on the issue!!

  • My LO breaks out with everything! I can't even figure out what she is allergic to half the time. I think fleece allergy is definitely possible. Hopefully you have found the cause and the rashes will stop!

  • I would think it's possible, now that you've switched it up hopefully you have the problem solved. Let us know how it goes!

  • Could be fleece...could be heat rash because the fleece is warmer. My daughter has had a rash on her chest/stomach for the past few months and it is a heat rash (I know, a bit weird to have in MD during the winter). The ped said to use Aquaphor if we wanted, but since it doesn't bother her it's not a huge problem. My cousin, who has a son who has had every rash you can name, said to let it dry out (don't wash every night, use fragrance free cleanser, etc) and it will get better.

  • Our LO's eczema is made worse by fleece... which totally sucks because it seems like all the feety pjs that I find in his size (12months) are all fleece!  I can't find cotton pjs (with feet) bigger than 9 months any where in stores.  We do have a couple fleece pair that MIL got him so I try to only use those maybe once a week (on REALLY cold nights) with a onesie underneath.  He also has a fleece pullover that he wears but that's usually fine since obviously he has his regular clothes underneath.

99% of the time I have to dress my son in cotton.  You may want to go that route.  It's not worth the poor little rash they develop.  GL!

  • I can't believe nobody else recommended it already, but with fleece you really should layer it with a cotton onesie.  It causes a heat rash because they sweat so much under the fleece.  I have done this for both my daughters and it works great.  Once or twice I may have forgotten to bring a onesie (if we change into pjs while out late or I if I was just in a rush) it never failed to cause a rash in one night!

  • DId you happen to ask about a heat rash?  DS has had one on and off for about a month.  Nothing seems to help but nakey time and just PJ's (no sleep sack) with the heat up a bit higher in the house.  I've noticed that the rash does get better when he's in cotton sleepwear - I think it's because he's a little heater and the cotton breathes better than the fleece.

  • Thank you so much for the responses. I hadn't considered heat rash at all. I think I will try a cotton sleeper with the heat up a little more. Crossing my fingers that this is the answer!!
