African Yams...

Yep, DH & I were out shopping today and while we were waiting to check out an older woman in the line next to us said, "Oh Twins!! I only say that because I can't wait to have twins!! I want twins so bad... I'm going to try African Yams. I heard they up your chances of getting pregnant with twins and you can order them online!!"

I proceeded to tell her that I didn't eat yams and that I don't even like them. Then she asked the usual "Do twins run in your family?" I told her that mine were ID and they can't run in the family, but told her that fraternal twins are the only ones that can run in a family. She was fairly clueless as most people w/out twins are and it made me laugh. Even DH kept asking about the "African Yams" and laughing because he couldn't believe people actually believe in that.

I have seen comments on here about yams, but never African ones... People crack me up!!

Re: African Yams...

  • Confused  She's apparently researched "how to have twins" on Dr. Google...

  • I do remember reading recently that Nigeria has the highest rate of twinning in the world. There actually is some speculation that the local diet (which includes lots of yams) can contribute to the release of multiple eggs. So strange.

That does still sound like a crazy encounter!

Yep. That's where she got it from. We've had several lurkers post here asking about the magical African yams.

  • I, too, have heard the whole yam ordeal. Not sure if it works or not, can't say I've tried it.
  • when I was having trouble T-TTC yams (not sweet potatoes as some people thought) were suggested to help better your egg quality and possibly increase your eggs. I was willing to try any natural remedy pretty much. However, I never had any one suggest it to "get twins." In theory it would be the same as clomid (although how funny would it be if you requested monitoring because you were eating yams?). I actually ended up doing injections before I got around to yams though, maybe I could have saved myself a few grand!
