Hello,
I am wondering why twins are induced at 37 weeks? When I first started out I never thought I would make it but now that it is approaching I am wondering why they induce twins so early? I go for my growth scan this Friday and they plan to set a date for me at 37 weeks for induction (if I don't go before). I am wondering if I have no signs of labor and everything looks good why I couldn't go longer. I do plan on talking to my dr. about this on Friday but just wanted some insight. Thanks.
Re: Induction at 37 weeks
you need to ask your doc why. That's not common.... most docs will have twins go to 38 or 39 weeks as long as there are no problems. My hospital won't schedule a delivery before 38w for twins, unless medically necessary.
are there any issues with your babies that would require them to come earlier?
my MFM would absolutely not let me go to 39 weeks. i think he prefers 37 weeks but will let me go to 38 if i can make it.
it just has to do with potential complications with the babies that arise more with twins and things "expiring" earlier with twins like the uterus and placenta/s.
Yeah, that isn't common. I had to BEG for an induction and then do a lung maturity amnio before they would schedule anything before 38 week.
I really wanted the babies out at 37 weeks bc I am very small and was very uncomfortable at that point. Since the babies were over 6 pounds and lungs were mature I got over my guilt and went for the early induction. The babies were perfectly healthy, born at 37w3d. BUT! If you think you can keep going, God bless you and keep them baking!
Definitely talk to your Dr about it.

Ah, that makes sense. Mine were di/di and we scheduled my induction for 37w6d. (I'm weird but I wanted their birthday to be on the 6th instead of the 7th. Sometimes I regret that though because it would be so much easier to just say "38 weeks"; they were only 3 hrs short of it
).
Ah, that's it. That makes sense to me, and I think it's great that your doctor is comfortable with you delivering them vaginally.
From what my MFM told me they usually like to take mo/di around 36 weeks, so you're getting another week cushion. Mine were born at 36 weeks 3 days- c-section.
For mo/di I wouldn't wait until 38 weeks if your doctor isn't comfortable. I'd keep the 37. They're concerned about the placenta deteriorating since two babies are using it.
Mine were induced at 37 weeks too, but because of pre-e. Otherwise we'd have gone longer.
Your situation sounds like your docs are looking out for you and the boys and what's best. Just keep the dialogue open with your doc so everyone is comfortable!
