what does your LO wear in a carseat?

hi ladies!  I'm hopping over from the Dec moms board to ask a quick question.  my first baby was born in the summer so by the time it was cold, he was old enough to have a blanket over him in the carseat and be warm enough.

what does your LO wear in the carseat to stay warm?  are blankets around him/her enough over their clothes?  I know you are not supposed to bundle them too much for safety reasons but I wasn't sure if I should pick up one of those whole body prams from carters to make sure he/she is warm enough.  thanks ladies! :)

  • I live in Georgia so I may not be as worried as some others, but we have had some chilly days. When we go out in the cold, I usually make sure she has on warm clothes - we have a few fleece outfits with footies that we've used. Then I just put a blanket over her - we have some fluffy blankets and just regular thicker ones that I use depending how cold and what time of day. Usually in the car, she's ok without being completely bundled up - just make sure she's good when we get out. I usually make sure she has on a hat and sometimes mittens if it's really cold since she doesn't like her arms covered.

  • I put a sweater or hoodie on my LO over her regular clothes and put a hat on her head. We have the JJ Cole bundle me for her carseat and it does a great job keeping DD warm enough we don't need to put her in too much.

  • Regular clothes (although she is in sleepers most of the time still).  I put a blanket over her and she wears a hat.  If she is in a short sleeve shirt I have a thin fleece sweater that I put on her.

  • I live in Texas and the coldest it has been is about 45-50. I dress DS in a footed sleeper, a hat, and then either a receiving blanket or a fleece blanket over him. Just depends on the temp.

This.  We put her in something seasonal (fleece footies or terrycloth or something like that) and then just zip the Bundle Me up.  Most of the time I end up unzipping it in the car because she gets too warm but to go out in the air, we use that.  We haven't taken her anywhere but doctor appointments at this point, but that's what we have done.

  • It depends on how long she'll be outside. It ifs just going from house to car to inside event, then it her regular clothes and a sweater, hat and blanket across her lap. I worry more about her overheating in the car.

I'll dress her warmer if she'll be outside longer.

  • Buffalo, NY here:

Baby wears his regular clothes (usually a fleece one-piece outfit) and we put a blanket over his lap.  He also has the JJ Cole cover for his carseat.  Once we are in the car, I unzip the carseat cover because it does get toasty in there. If we go for a walk, however, I do have Carter's fleece "snowsuit," and I still bundle like the car ride.

  • I'm in Southern California so the coldest it has been is like 50-60 but I put her in regular clothes (usually onsie, pants, and socks) and a little fleece jacket (It's no thicker than a sleeper so it is safe.) and then cover her with either a thick or thin blanket depending on the temp and if its really cold I put a hat on her.

We also have the bundle me and love it. it keeps DS nice and warm when we go out.

  • He wears footed sleepers ... either cotton or fleece, depending on how cold it is out (we live in northern Ontario, so it can be pretty brisk some days), then has a blanket put around/over him, a hat on his head, and then a zip-up fleece car seat cover. I usually unzip the car seat cover when he's in the car and always when we're in a store because he gets very, very warm otherwise. Fortunately my LO seems to have inherited his dad's winterized circulation system rather than mine ... I wouldn't be warm enough in what I have for LO, but I've checked his warmth several times and he's always warm to sweating.

  • Wisconsin here - DD will just wear whatever outfit she has on for the day. For running out we have a car seat cover and tuck a fleecy blanket over her lap.

She usually ends up getting too warm in the car, so we fully unzip the cover and take off the blanket. We really just need to make sure she's covered when running from door to car and back.

Just an FYI the Bundle Me should not be used in carseats. There should be nothing between the carseat and the baby as it can compress during an accident and cause the baby to be ejected. The same goes for bulky coats and snowsuits. A shower-cap style cover should be used instead like this one:

To PP: We're in IA- we dress DD in regular clothes, a hat, light blanket over her feet/body, shower-cap carseat cover, then when a thick, blanket over that when we're carrying her outside. Once in the car we remove the thick blanket, and upzip the cover to prevent overheating.
