Austin Babies

what age for b a r b i e s?

I had not planned on giving them to DD yet (she's 3), but she got one as a Christmas present this weekend. I plan on returning it, b/c I just don't want to get into that whole barbie mess just yet - but I'm wondering how other moms feel about barbies and when you started giving them to your daughters.

  • I'd be totally fine with DD having one, and she's not even 2.  She plays with dolls, and I see Barbie as just that - another pretend doll.

  • Layna's been playing with Barbies since before her 3rd birthday.  I used to collect them and had a few in pristine condition, I found them in my parents basement last summer.  Silly to keep them in a box all these years so I gave them to Layna.  She LOVES them.  She has 4 or 5 now and she plays with them nearly every day.  She gets so imaginative with them, they're a lot of fun.

  • A got her st one at 3 yo.  I would have never bought one for her, I would rather bu something else.  But, since someone gave her one as a gift I was ok with it.  She never played with it much.  J on the other hand likes playing with them (she has 2 or 3 now). Stick out tongue
  • I don't plan on ever buying Kate one.  If she was given one as a gift, I would let her keep it, but I would probably try to hide it away after a bit.  I'm mean like that though.

  • My daughter is almost three(feb) and has been playing with them for months. She loves them and they keep her engaged for hours. I honestly don't see what the big deal is with barbies...I played with them and turned out just fine with no body image issues or anything. My SIL(who doesn't have any kids) hates them and she totally rolled her eyes when that's what my daughter said she wanted. I think what my daughter loves the moat is all the little pieces and accessories and how she can interchange them between each one.

    Yes

Unless she loved it more than life itself, I probably wouldn't keep it around though.

Ditto.  But more because I think barbie is dumb, not because I'm worried about body issues.

  • DD doesn't have any barbies yet (she'll be 3 this week) but i would have no problem with it if she got one. I remember playing with barbies and i loved them. i don't see what the big deal is about it. it's a toy. and they're fun.

DD got the loving family dollhouse for christmas and loves playing with the family that came with it, so i'm guessing when she does eventually get barbies she'll love playing with those as well.
