I had not planned on giving them to DD yet (she's 3), but she got one as a Christmas present this weekend. I plan on returning it, b/c I just don't want to get into that whole barbie mess just yet - but I'm wondering how other moms feel about barbies and when you started giving them to your daughters.

Layna's been playing with Barbies since before her 3rd birthday. I used to collect them and had a few in pristine condition, I found them in my parents basement last summer. Silly to keep them in a box all these years so I gave them to Layna. She LOVES them. She has 4 or 5 now and she plays with them nearly every day. She gets so imaginative with them, they're a lot of fun.
Unless she loved it more than life itself, I probably wouldn't keep it around though.
Ditto. But more because I think barbie is dumb, not because I'm worried about body issues.
DD doesn't have any barbies yet (she'll be 3 this week) but i would have no problem with it if she got one. I remember playing with barbies and i loved them. i don't see what the big deal is about it. it's a toy. and they're fun.
DD got the loving family dollhouse for christmas and loves playing with the family that came with it, so i'm guessing when she does eventually get barbies she'll love playing with those as well.
