diaper bag or backpack?

When I was first pregnant, before I knew it was twins, I found this bag at the baby consignment store for cheap.

(can't make it clicky on google for some reason)

Do you think it would be big enough for twins? With DD I used a relatively normal size diaper bag, maybe a bit smaller then this one.

I think I can still return this one, it still has the tags on it. Do you think a backpack is better? I was looking at the dadgear diaper backpack. It looked good. But is there an advantage to a diaper backpack over a regular backpack with a couple insulated bottle bags inside? (DH's idea).

Re: diaper bag or backpack?

  • i think it just depends on preference.  to me, a diaper bag is a diaper bag.  with my first i used the petunia picklebottom...it can be used as a backpack as well.  i will probably just use it again for the twins bc i usually had more than enough space in it.  maybe not, it's getting kind of ratty.  one of my friends (who had twins) used a back pack all the time.

  • I use a petunia picklebottom as well.  It has the backpack straps and the regular shoulder strap.  I've used one backpack strap to throw it over my shoulder before however, it's nice to have the shoulder strap to put around the double stroller handles, too.

I can't imagine using a backpack only because it seems everything would get into one big mess in the bottom of it.

  • I have a Kate Spade Stevie Nyack diaper bag and that thing is huge. It looks like that one is of similar size. Maybe I'm just terribly vain but I just can't do a backpack type diaper bag. I wanted something nice and purse-like. If I didn't feel like carrying it, it went under the stroller, or hung on stroller handles.

Maybe it's just because I never left the house but I really didn't find the need for a ginormo diaper bag. I stopped carrying one alltogether around 9 months or so. It stays in the car and, if we're in somewhere a long time like the mall, I'll bring it in, but for Target or the grocery store, I just have stuff in my car.

  • This is what we ended up getting for our twins:

We will be traveling quite a bit internationally with the kids so I knew we needed something substantial, and the idea of a backpack made sense to me so that I could have both hands free for other things. Plus DH won't mind carrying it either. This one looks like it will be easy to keep things organized without losing track of stuff because there are so many compartments and you can open it all the way up. Obviously I haven't had a chance to try it out yet with the girls but that's what we settled on.

Same here. And, after about 8 months, I stopped using a diaper bag unless we were going out on a day trip or to a museum or something, so I didn't see the need to buy a fancy diaper bag. I just used an old backpack that I had at home. For times when I needed something a bit nicer (fancy holiday party with the kids), I have a huge Kate Spade purse that fit everything I need.

  • I think it depends on whether or not you're someone who likes backpacks.  I don't, and they always seemed like such a hassle to me.  The both hands free thing never made sense to me since my diaper bag always hung off the stroller handlebars or was over my shoulder.  With a backpack, you can't just reach in while holding a baby, you have to take it off to get into it, so it seemed like much more of a hassle.

Like pp, I just didn't use the diaper bag a ton.  Around a year I started throwing some diapers and wipes in my purse when we went out.  Go with what you have if you like it!

  • We have a Skip Hop Duo Double. I love it and the stroller clips are terrific. We go out a lot - shopping, friends/relatives, restaurants (though that ship is close to sailing) - and I like to be prepared/am a compulsive packer :) We also cloth diaper and its plenty roomy.

I also have a small double wet bag with a shoulder strap I sometimes take (extra diaper and a bottle in one compartment) if I'm running out with just one baby for an hour or less.
