s/o weight gain

Am I the only one whose doctors never really commented on weight gain? They monitored it, but they never once told me I was gaining too much or too little. I am 5'3" but they never said "you should gain ____ lbs." They focused on the babies' weight, and never said much of anything about mine.

I guess that's why I always get confused about weight gain posts. I'm sure there's a threshold for too much or too little, but I took Dr. Luke's book to be more guidelines than the Bible.

Re: s/o weight gain

  • Mine has never said anything either.  I also had NO problems gaining weight so it always cracks me up when people ask how they will ever gain that recommend weight.

  • I'm weighed at every visit, but doc has never said anything about how much I should or shouldn't pack on. I just weighed myself and saw that I've put on 20 lbs (having had a relatively low BMI before I became pregnant) and I just think, whatever. I'll put on what I put on, I'm not overeating so I don't stress about it.

  • At my first appointment after I found out I was pregnant they told me what I should roughly look to gain based on my height/weight, along with all of the other introductory pregnancy information. The only other times when they've commented on my weight is when I was losing weight during the first trimester, and then now towards the end they're just saying they're happy with my progress (slow weight gain) because I guess rapid weight gain is sometimes indicative of water retention.

For me they also focus on the babies' measurements from our u/s, and as long as the babies are doing good they just tell me to keep doing what I'm doing.

I do worry sometimes that I'm not eating enough and thus not gaining enough, but realistically, I can't force myself to eat without making myself sick. I just try and eat healthy, get in solid amounts of protein, dairy, fruits and veggies every day and listen to my body.

  • Mine never said anythng either.  But thats probably because I did pretty good at monitoring my weight and gaining just enough without gaining too much.

  • Mine didn't give me any specific guidelines, but she said given my frame and weight pre-preg, she wouldn't be concerned if I gain up to 60 lbs.

  • Neither my OB nor my peri ever said anything to me.  MY peri was of the belief that the babies will take what they need and I will be left with the rest.  The only place I heard about weight stuff was here and Dr. Luke's book.  Nervous as I was about my babies and not carrying them to full term I loosely followed Dr. Luke's rec's.  I delivered at 36 weeks exactly and they weight 4 lbs 3 oz. and 5 lbs 2 oz. GL!
  • My doctor hasn't mentioned it at all. They weigh me every apt but never talk about it. Like someone else said, they always talk about the babies weight, not mine. but I've gained like 20 lbs so far tho, so I'm not having any trouble in that area. =)

  • My peri mentioned that I was behind on weight gain at my first appt. I was only up 11 lbs. at 23 weeks, but I didn't find out I was carrying twins until 20 weeks. My obgyn has never expressed concern.

  • mine never said anything either.  i also had a very uneventful 1st pregnancy with no complications.

im 23 weeks and ive gained 8.5 pounds.  (i was 126lbs at 5'7 when i got pregnant).  my OB is totally fine with it and so is my MFM.  my MFM mentioned that im "below average" for weight gain for where i am at, but all he meant was is that most women he sees have gained more at this point, and that im fine.  after i got back to my pre-pregnancy weight, as i lost 6lbs in the beginning, i gain on average about 1-2lbs per week....one week i gained 3 pounds, then the next week, i gained none. my babies were in the 50th and 75th percentile at my 21 week ultrasound.  as long as my MFM is happy, im happy.

  • It was only briefly discussed at my very first OB appointment.  Then not a word regarding weight gain or nutrition until I was told to eat a high protein diet for TTTS.
  • Nothing from my doc either. I do think it was helpful for me to read Dr. Luke's book just to wrap my head around what was going to happen to my body, but like OP I took everything as guidelines, not strict orders.

  • My OB never set put guidelines or said anything about my 80lb gain. I asked about weight gain, but no one was really concerned.

  • My Dr wouldn't have ordinarily cared, but they wanted me to gain b/c they were afraid my low body fat would make it tough for me to carry twins
