Toddlers: 24 Months+

POLL: Crib or Toddler Bed?

Anyone else have a 24 month old still totally happy sleeping in her crib? My (almost) 2 y/o has shown no interest in climbing out, and she acutally loves her bed. I know a lot of toddlers this age are already or transitioning to a toddler bed at this point. Just curious what the ratio is? Also, if your child transitioned later, what age did they finally move to a toddler bed?

Re: POLL: Crib or Toddler Bed?

  • At 2, my daughter was still in her crib and completely content with it. In fact, we just moved her about a month ago when we moved to our new house and she got her "big girl room": she got to pick out wall stickers, bedding set and color for her walls; she was super excited. I'm in the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" camp, so as long as she's not trying to climb out and is happy in her crib, I'd just leave her there. Transition for us went fairly smoothly at 3 and while naps are still hit or miss here (she'll just play in her room for a couple of hours some days), I'm really happy we waited this long.

  • Oh trust...I'll leave her in there until she's 5 if she'll let me. I'm in no rush ; ) Just wondering if she is the odd ball, or if others her age are still in their cribs.

  • G is still in her crib (she will be 2.5 next week).  We are about a week away from totally finishing her big girl room and then will let her decide (within reason) when she is ready to sleep in her big girl bed.  She actually got out when she was 21 months but she hurt herself and I think got scared straight : ) So even though she is now more than capable of getting out, she doesn't even try.

  • DD#1 transitioned easily at 19 mos- it was sort of accidental at that age, but it was awesome.

DD#2 We put in a toddler bed at 22 months- while she was happy in her crib, the girls wanted to share a room and we said only once she was in a big girl bed and that was that.

DS- he's 2 yrs 5 mos and loving the crib.  He will remain until, well, 5, if he lets me.

  • Mine will be 2 in 10 days and he is still happy in his crib.   I want to extend the crib days as along as possible since our plan is to move the boys to bunk beds and that will give time for both boys to mature.

  • Little Man will be 2.5 next week as well and while he jumps up and down in his crib (while holding the rail for support) he has made no effort to climb out.  He seems to love his crib, has not asked for a "bed", does not fuss at all about being in side the crib...  and I can't help but LOVE his "safety cage"  I know he isn't out wandering his room, he is safe to leave for 2 min inside it when he wakes up if I need to go to the bathroom in the morning, etc.  I will be dragged kicking and screaming to the Mattress store when the time comes to transition him.  If he can stay in there until he is a teenager I'd let him.

  • Right now hes in a crib but we're skipping the toddler and going straight for a full.

  • We transfered DS1 to a toddler bed at 18 months because DS2 was due in 3 months and we needed the crib for him.  We decided it didn' make sense to buy a second crib.

  • We switched DD1 at about 20 months even though she was perfectly happy in her crib. Only because we needed the crib for dd2.
  • We didn't switch DD from a crib to a bed till right after her 3rd Birthday.  She never climbed out.  Also she is on the small side so she fit fine in her crib and I was worried about her climbing in and out of a bed since she is short.  We had no problems with the transition and I saw no reason to push it earlier.

  • DD is 2 years & 7 months old & we have no plans or desire to move her to a toddler bed anytime soon.  She seems very happy in her crib & we're happy she's happy!  Sleeps 12+ hours a night & naps for a solid hour.  I'm not so sure she would be doing either if she had the ability to get out & roam on her own.

  • He would have been in the crib far longer if he'd left it up to me, but he started climbing out around 21 or 22 months. We lowered the mattresses to the floor and he just got mad, which led to more night wakings. When we finally tried the toddler bed, he took right to it and went back to sleeping all night. It has its own problems, though.

  • We just moved DS because we have LO#2 on the way and wanted to give him time to transition before his new sister arrives. Plus, we'll need the crib for #2. If we didn't need to make the transition, I'd have kept him in there until he asked to get out. He didn't try and climb (or hadn't yet), so there wasn't a real reason to move him.

  • DS is 28 months (using months because this board has a large age range). He does not try to climb out of his crib yet and sleeps well in it. So we're not messing with a good thing yet. We probably will buy him a bed (twin, not toddler) in the Spring when we go full-scale with potty training (which we haven't started yet).
