Newborn coughing - reflux?

Finn has started spitting up a bit.  Cal was a spitter-upper, big-time, but it didn't start until he was a a little older.  But Finn also does this coughing thing - just a couple of coughs, usually after a feeding, either followed by spitup, or by swallowing (think he must be coughing up some spitup and just swallowing it back down?)

Anyone else's newborn cough like that?  It bothers me, but I do think it's related to reflux.

Childhood cancer (DH) + chemo + radiation = 0 sperm.

LO #2 - 1 m/c, 2 BFNs, 4th IUI worked (unmedicated/self-monitored with new donor sperm).
Life is beautiful!

  • Sorry I don't have any experience with this.  Check with your pedi or a nurse in the office.  I am sure they get calls about reflux all the time. Is it after he eats or laying down too soon after eating?  I am sure it is unsettling, especially because he is so young.  Good luck.

  • DD2 has reflux and has been a snorter since day one. She snorts all.of.the.time! She does this gasping thing too that is awful!

Both the Pedi and the GI said it was relaed to reflux.

  • Yup.  Luca started doing this right away.  He cannot lay flat on his back either or this happens every time.  We invested in the Fisher Price Rock N Play sleeper which is basically a bedside cradle that puts the baby on an incline.  It has helped SO much.  He still occasionally coughs or gags a few times and then spits or throws up his entire feeding but I feel like it is slowly getting better.  I didn't experience any of this with Jude so it's all been new to me.  My pedi said she preferred not to prescribe Zantac or anything unless it seemed like they were in pain, which he hasn't shown any signs of being in pain.  Hopefully they both outgrow it soon!

  • all babies have reflux - it's only a problem when, well, it's a problem... when it causes pain, so much spitting up that there isn't enough weight gain, etc. That's when they call it GERD, or sometimes called GER in babies.

i'd ask the pedi about it- but likely it's not an issue... Finn is just learning how to swallow, etc... maybe taking too much in, etc.

Most babies don't have real reflux issues until about 6 weeks old... though of course it can start sooner... (i used to sell prevacid to pedi gastros, so heard lots of reflux stories)
