Trying to Get Pregnant

CML, Gleevec, coming off BCPs and Pregnancy

Hi Girls.  It's been a LONG time since I've posted here but I have some questions. I was dx'd with CML (leukemia) three weeks prior to having my 2nd child.  The CML was preceded by ~20w of complete bedrest with both my children (completely unrelated to my cancer).

I am planning to go off Gleevec soon to TTC.  Anyone been there.  Can you offer any insight?  Any side effects?  I'm really hoping my energy level comes back as does my sensitivity to certain foods/activities.

Also, any info on coming off BCPs?  I was never on BCPs prior to my other PGs so I have no idea how it works coming off them.  I would start my next pack Sunday but hope to start TTC in early February.  Should I just stop BCPs now in the hopes that I start regulating by February?  How does this all work.

PS - yes I do have the blessing of my doctors, in case you're wondering.  And bedrest was d/t incompetent cervix, PTL, and subchorrionic hematomas (12cm with child #1 and 10cm with #2).

Re: CML, Gleevec, coming off BCPs and Pregnancy

  • I'll apologize in advance, as I have zero experience relating to your first question.. however, I do want to wish you the best with your recovery :)

Regarding BCP... it can take some time (one to several months or more) for your body/hormones to regulate again once you come off of them... however...

With that said, it is entirely possible to achieve pregnancy as soon as you stop taking BCP - so if you're not planning on actually TTC until February 2012, I would not recommend coming off the BCP now - OR - alternatively, you can stop the BCP and use another non-hormonal based form of BC until you are ready to TTC next year.

Good luck to you, and all the best.

  • Welcome!

I can't offer a ton of advice, but congrats on being in remission!!!!  That's awesome.

I'd make sure you're under a DR's care when coming off of the Gleevec.

As far as BCPs, that's up to you.  If it were me I'd finish this pack and then not start another one.  I'd use a back up form of BC until you're ready to start TTC.  Maybe check out fertilityfriend.com in the meantime.

    Good luck to you

It sure is a miracle drug!  I see my oncologist tomorrow to discuss coming off it to try.  He's on board but I'm not sure how he wants me to do it.  I'm thinking it's on until I ovulate then off till I get a BFN/BFP.  I was SHOCKED to hear he didn't think I needed a bone marrow biopsy prior but since my Philadelphia chromosome is negative hes not worried!  Yahoo!

And thanks for the GL from all you ladies!  :)  I'm sure excited for another babe!!
