how old for bunk beds?

I know it's a long way off, but do any of you know about when kids can be "trusted" to sleep on the top bunk of a bunk bed?  A friend of mine has one and it got me wondering when kids are really old enough to safely sleep on the top bunk.

    I believe the recommendation is at least 6 or 7.  My girls moved into bunkbeds last year so DD#1 was 4.5 and DD#2 was almost 3.  Obviously DD#1 sleeps on top, but DD#2 can and does climb up to the top.  DS can and does even climb up there, but we try to stop it...

    Our plan is to move the boys to them when DS2 is finished crib-sleeping, holding that off but when the time comes...hoping DS1 will be around 5

    We were told 6 years old by the furniture salesman which was fine by me. DH wanted them but I did not.  I had two major spills out of the top bunk when I was 5 and do not want them for DD.  She is going to be an only child so we don't need them for sharing and she is such a mover, I would be a nervous wreck.  BTW-both of my falls were when I was asleep and had a rail.
