Horrible news story-the house fire in Stamford, Conn....

I can't imagine in my wildest dreams losing my children (nine yr old girl and seven yr old twin girls) and parents in a house fire and surviving it.  All at 5 am on Christmas morning.

Interestingly, her contractor was there at five in the morning and also escaped in his boxer shorts.  Her H had to be driven to the estate from New York....

Mind Blowing.....thoughts?  Lets discuss....

Re: Horrible news story-the house fire in Stamford, Conn....

  • Absolutely tragic news - I can't imagine how she will carry on. And not at all to sound harsh....what the hell is her contractor doing there on Christmas morning at 5AM in his underwear. Hmmm.....somebody was caught with her pants down.

  • Is it a possibility that he was staying there (In a different room) while he completed the project?  Weird to be doing it with your parents and children under the same roof.  What a way to be "caught" if, in reality, it is the way it looks.

  • That is awful.  I can't imagine and I can't imagine how I could go on.
  • horrible... and yes, very fishy story re: the contractor- i hope it's just something weird but innocent.

    so sad.

An entire family (parents, 2 kids + their dog) were killed in a small plane crash on Tuesday right near our house... I drove by the accident spot the day after and it was just haunting to know that a whole family perished right there...... DH and I were saying that while it's horrible, there was some peace knowing they went together... because we know that the idea of one of us surviving something like that is just too hard to even think about.

  • I felt sick when i heard that story on the news this morning.  Help me calm my fears, could that possibly happen in a home with working fire alarms?
  • I can't imagine standing outside a home watching as my children and parents burned to death. This story really seems fishy to me. I truly hope I'm wrong, though.

I can't imagine carrying on without my children and my parents...

  • I think they said the contractor was a family friend.  I think running out in your boxers is normal.  How many of you have husbands that sleep in just boxers?  He was helping renovate the house, maybe he was a Christmas guest as well.

Renovations, Christmas time (lights trees, candles, etc) are prime fire starting opportunities.  I don't think anything sketchy was going on.  I hope I'm right.

  • Absolutely horrible.  I have no idea how I'd be able to go on.

Actually it never entered my mind until I read someone else comment about it online and then, I thought it was an interesting twist on an unfathomable tragedy.  Thanks.

  • It is an unimaginable tragedy.  I am not sure that I would be able to go on.  And, I don't think anyone is back-pedaling or weird for thinking that it is strange that the contractor was at the home on christmas morning and her husband was in the city.  I thought it was very strange and read a few articles about the tragedy, one mentioned that she filed for divorce from her husband earlier this year, so if she was with the contractor it really isn't that big of a deal.  A family member was quoted as saying they were still on friendly terms.  It also said the father was in the hospital from shock eventhough he wasn't in the house...I would imagine I would be in shock as well.

  • Honestly, when I saw that story I tried not to think about it at all.  So I don't think I can discuss it much.  We live in a very old home as well (circa 1870), and although they say that fire was likely caused from embers from a starting log, I know they think that the age of the house contributed.

In the end, my prayers are with that family and, as always, I'll hug my girls tight when I put them to bed at night and thank God we are all safe.

As far as the posters jumping all over Ourgrad for mentioning the contractor...come on.  I thought it was very odd too when the story first came out.  WTF is a contractor doing at someone's house at 5 am on Christmas?  Now they've stated that she and her husband are going through a divorce and the contractor was a friend, so it makes sense.  Relax people.

Ok., so I worked a 12 hour shift yesterday (and today, for that matter), so I'm just now seeing this. First of all, how horrible to have lost everything that truly matters in life in one fell swoop.

And vlahop, yes, something terrible like this CAN happen in a home with working fire alarms. I know, it happened to me. We had a flash fire in our apartment 2 years ago this coming March. The fire was so hot and grew so fast it melted the fire alarms off our walls before they had a chance to go off. If DH and I had been in the apartment when it happened, we would have died (according to the analysis from the fire department). We were lucky we only lost our stuff and our two kitten furbabies.

  • they said on the news this morning that the fire was caused by embers from a fire in the fireplace that had been put outside the mudroom. They also said no one was supposed to be living in the house during the renovations and that they didn't know if the fire alarms were working.
