Anyone BF and TTC?

DS still nurses fairly frequently during the day.  I am very close to night weaning him (which has helped so much with his sleep, yay!).  So, my issue is that we are TTC and I'm worried that the BF is inhibiting ovulation.  AF just returned about 3 months ago but my cycles seem so wonky.  I think I may have ovulated once in there but I don't know for sure.  The main reason I am worried is that we were hoping to have our kids be fairly close in age, around 2 years apart, and the clock is ticking!

So does anyone have experience with this?  Would you just wait and see if the cycles get back on track since I have recently started night weaning and maybe this will help?  Or would you cut out more daytime sessions?  Wean completely?

  • Night weaning will probably help. I read that very few women need to fully wean to initiate fertility. We've been trying for 4 months and I nurse about 3 times a day. I recently started taking Vitex to help regulate my cycles and get my ovulating.

    Good luck!

  • I just wanted to say good luck! It can happen without weaning (night or day), but everyone is different and reacts differently to nursing. DS started nursing constantly again around 13 mo., but decreased to a few times per day/night around 15 mo. My first pp cycle  (at 15 mo) was really long, so I expected that to happen until DS wasn't nursing as much or weaned entirely, but I ovulated and got pg the next cycle. I wish I could say that it happens that quick for everyone, but it doesn't. I, second the ttc while nursing forum at motheringdotcom. They were (are) super sweet and helpful!

I will say that nursing while pg has been one of the hardest things I have ever done (although I've read lots of stories of women who love it, so I'm not trying to discourage anyone who wants to nurse while pg). I recommend the book "Adventures in Tandem Nursing" if you are pg and BF! I just started reading it, and wish I would've started it while TTC.

  • Well as you can see per my tickers it didn't stop us I guess.. And we weren't TTC either.. I'm still BF-ing including multiple night feedings.. I guess things are always different for everyone.

  • Thanks everyone.  I have thought about charting but DS just recently started STTN (and still doesn't always).  He still nurses around 6 am but sometimes it's earlier, sometimes later.  I'm worried that it will screw up my temps if I don't test at the same time every day without consecutive hours of sleep beforehand.  I suppose I could set an alarm for 6 am or something and temp then.  Maybe I'll just try it.

  • I was ready to TTC long before my body cooperated.  I just kept telling myself that I didn't want to take something away from the baby in my arms for a theoretical baby in my future.  AF returned when DS1 was 19 months.  I have pretty clear ovulation signs and I'm pretty sure I ovulated for the first time just prior to that first pp AF.  We were very lucky and got pregnant right away with twins!  So in my case patience paid off x2 :) GL to you!

  • Yes! DS still nurses twice a night and 2-6 times a day (depending on whether we're home or not). AF is pretty irregular and I was worried for the exact same reason. I've been charting BBT for a few months, but it is rather erratic since I never really get to sleep long enough to get a good reading.

Amazon has super cheap ovulation and pregnancy test strips ($9 for 40 O tests and 10 P tests, also 30 P tests for $5), so I ordered those and started taking daily O readings soon after my last period started. I didn't even know what I was doing and did them with first morning pee like a P test, but I still got a positive reading 12 days past 1st day. We had a ton of sex, and!!! it worked. :) I'm now 3w6d pregnant.

So anyway, the moral of the story is it is possible, but you need to find out for sure when you are ovulating now, and the test strips are great. Here is a ton of good info about O tests:

  • I am really fertile so that might make a difference but I got pregnant the first month I stooped taking birth control and I was nursing ds1 who just turned 19 mos. He nursed a good amount still and nursed half way thru my pregnancy bedrest I weaned him at age 2. No reason to stop nursing.
  • I was EBFing and having irregular cycles, DS was about 10mo old, when I became pg with my 3w old.  I would think night weaning will help and as he eats more and more real food and is more and more interested in being on the go, you will find his bf sessions naturally cut back anyway.
