When to install carseat?

When are you ladies planning on installing your carseat?  The plan is to install it in DH's car so that it's ready to go when the baby decides to come.  I just can't seem to decide when we need to do this.  I know we'll need to take it to the fire station to have it checked out in advance, too so I don't want to put it off then run out of time but there's no sense in driving around with it in there for way too long.

So, how far in advance are you planning on installing yours?

Re: When to install carseat?

  • Glad you asked this...because I keep getting mixed advice!  For now the car seat is just sitting in his nursery:)

  • I think I read somewhere that ideally the car seat should be installed and the hospital bag packed around 35 weeks so I think that is what we are going to do. The car seat is all set up and ready in the nursery, it just needs to be put in the car. I am going to start the bag soon. I can't believe it's only 3 weeks until that "ideal" time for these things!

  • We are installing ours between 35-36 weeks.  Our biggest reason is that we are taking our hospital tour of the maternity ward, which happens to be on the same night of the week they do the inspections.  So, it was more of a two birds, one stone kind of thing - get it checked while we are already at the hospital so we know it's right.

Now....how we are going to explain this new thing in the backseat to the dog, I'm not sure.  Wink

  • My shower is Jan. 14, and I've registered for some "seat savers"... So we've decided to wait until after the shower to see if we get them. If not, we're going to purchase them ourselves. (we are "car people", and protecting our investments is a for us.) We'll install after we get them.

So, unofficially, we'll be installing the car seat bases around 35 weeks. We won't be putting the car seat in until it's time to head to the hospital.

  • Thanks, this is helpful.  I'm off this week so I was thinking about doing it soon but wasn't sure if that was crazy.  I figure the more I can get done now, the less I'll have to worry about when school starts back up.

Isn't it crazy that we're getting so close?!

  • My base has been installed for a couple weeks now. I'm paranoid about not being prepared. The seat itself is still in the house.

  • We're probably going to install the base after the 1st of the year.  We won't put the carseat itself in until we go to the hospital.

36 weeks and/or when I get a new car.  Hopefully both those events will occur about the same time.
    Ditto this!

I am not trying to be snarky, but "seat savers" can affect the safety of a carseat and are not reccomended for use.

  • I still need to buy another carseat. My ds's will expire. I'm hoping my mom gets us one for a baby gift. I figure if all else fails dh can leave the hospital and get one from target. It's 1 mile from the hospital. We've installed carseats before so I'm not worried about getting it inspected. We will get the same graco model we're familiar with.

  • our baby shower will be at 34 weeks..so hopefully a few days after that! :)

  • DH installed it and took it to the FD on Friday. I know, we're early, but I've been preterm for a few weeks, so I'm trying to have everything prepared *just in case*. I'm really hoping LO will come around Jan 11th :D

  • Right around 36-37 weeks is probably when we will put bases in both cars so it is ready.

These seat savers were recommended at our local baby seat inspection station. I did my homework before making my decision, as my child's safety is my #1 priority. Thank you for the heads up tho.

  • I will probably do it around 36 weeks...that is when I have my home visit with my MW and her partners and when I have to have my birth kit together and ready.

  • We aren't going to buy it until after our showers, in case some aunts/cousins go in to buy it for us!

Our showers are Jan 8 and Jan 14, so I'll be 34 and 35 weeks along. So it'll be installed sometime after that.

  • we'll be installing them by the end of next week (Im due mid-Feb) because here, we have to book an appointment to get them checked which only happen once in a while here, and the appt we booked is Jan 10th. We have 1 infant seat for my car, and a 2-in-1 convertible for DH's car. I'll just leave the base in my car until we need it.
