Success after IF

killer headaches and a coke?

I've always had headaches during this pregnancy (mostly the "I got shot between the eyes and forehead" kind) and sometimes take tylenol if they get really bad.

I tend to avoid "forbidden" things like lunchmeat, cheeses, caffeine...etc. but I'm not to concerned if I slip now and then. (to each their own, I'm more of a "just don't take a bath in it" all-in-moderation momma)

Sipping on a can of Coke Zero or diet coke  over the afternoon seems to squash the headaches pretty quick. But now it's almost a daily thing. (no more than once a day, maybe 5 times a week is accurate)

Anyone got any sage words on the subject? (either way) Feel guilty? No worries? any other tricks?

  • I get the headaches too. Mainly in first tri and in the 3nd and after birth.. I am super sensitive to any hormone changes and my head is always the first to tell me soemthing is going on..

Coke isn't all bad.. I usually do the regular stuff cause I just feel like it works better for me. I also have used some more homeopathic stuff such as bengay on my temples and neck, peppermint oil in an ice bath helps also w the pain, and message when they are really bad.. Do you take Tylenol  that and coke when the are really bad.

But I don't think a little soda will hurt you at all..

  • My OB told me a coke here and there was just fine. Regular cole is "better/safer" because it doesn't contain artificial sweeteners.

  • I think that amount of caffeine, ingested slowly over time, is just fine.   So long as you don't also pound coffee in the morning, etc.    But ditto what others said.   I would go for the regular coke if it were me.   I worry less about calories and HFCS than I do about aspartame and other artificial sweeteners.

This. Not that you care one lick about what I have to say, but I do feel for you on the headaches during pgcy. I was always told by the OB that a 'regular' coke was better than diet anytime, and his limit for caffeine was the equivalent to 4 cans of pop a day for all caffeine consumption. Also, a tylenol and a coke was great (as it could be) for headaches.

  • Tylenol + a diet coke always did the trick.  I felt super naughty about it, but my OB said it was perfectly safe.

  • I'm actually sitting here at work right now sipping a diet coke (gasp).  I'm not an expert my any means, but my last pregnancy I limited caffeine to almost nothing in the first tri, but by the third tri all bets were off.  A diet coke helped me with headaches too (I hate the taste of regular coke).   I guess I figure everything in moderation, right?

  • I had a tall Starbucks and a 16 ounce coke last week because the headaches are so bad. I think I'm like you and generally try to avoid it but....these headaches are a killer so I say, it can't be any worse than medicine.,

  • totally fine. i stayed away from all caffeine with DS and he was born at 32w6d. with DD, i drank at least one mountain dew a day and made it to 39w. :)
  • You know I had one a day starting in the second tri due to headaches. IMO it's better to drink it and feel/function better than to suffer.  And you also know I took warm baths a lot for relief of my aches and pains.

  • I'm with you.  All things in moderation.  With Miles I allowed myself to have one can of soda each day.  He's obviously fine.  Could he have been better without it?  I'll never know.

  • I was never able to cut my coke out 100%. My OB knew and was okay with it. The only time I really cut back was when I found out I had GD. I still had one but (I worked my diet around it), I got to a point where I could go a day or 2 w/o one. I think as long as you're not having several everyday, it's no big deal. Caffeine headaches are no joke (that's what it sounds like you are having to me anyway).

  • I think it's fine. My ob have me a limit of mo more than 200 mg of caffeine a day. A can of soda has 30, that's it. I had soda with caffeine in it probably 5x a week during 2nd & 3rd tri. With that being said I dont drink diet bc it's less natural. Your body can quickly process out natural sugars but not artificial ones. But to each their own. I think the caffeine is fine, go for it and don't feel guilty!

  • am I chasing my tail with the caffeine consumption? just go cold turkey and then no more headaches? (I doubt that theory, b/c I didn't have ANY caffeine in the beginning and still got the headaches...)

I'll pick up some regular coke today. blech. it's like drinking whole milk after you've had skim for years, lol. thanks ladies!

  • I had them really bad when I was pregnant with Ava, and my OB recommended a can of coke in the afternoon.  That (+ tylenol when they were really bad) always did the trick.  I had a can a day and just limited other caffeine intake (though I still had an occasional cup of coffee, too).

  • Fwiw I drink 1-2 diet cokes 4 days a week at work b/c I love them and not for a valid reason like having a headache.  Also another FYI, 3/4 days I eat lunch (where I enjoy my diet cokes) with 1 or 2 OBs in my practice.

  • The only time I threw up while pregnant was the time I had a migraine. I drink coke, ate chocolate and took tylenol. It finally killed it.

I'd rather have the caffeine than the headache.

I'd also switch to regular coke.  For me, the diet stuff is so vile... and aspartame actually triggers migraines for me. I'm hypersensitive  to the taste of splenda too.

  • I wouldn't sweat it. I was so paranoid about caffeine during my first pregnancy, but with my second I had Coke and iced tea several times during the second and third trimesters.

I wonder if regular Coke would do even a better job than the diet.
