2 yr old doesn't sleep 1st night of vacation

So DD routinely doesn't sleep the first night we are away on a trip. We've had a couple of excuses the past couple times but her I am with DD watching tv at 1:40am. and I mean - NO SLEEP. She did not nap today, and slept from 7:30pm- 10pm and then 10:20 -12:20, and we've been up since. I feel like I'm doing something wrong at this point but I'm trying everything from milk/ water to crackers- comfortable temps, etc. Frankly I'd give her benedryl if I didn't fear her getting wired off of it. What do I do? Last time this happened she didn't sleep again til nap time the next day and I really need MY sleep before then. Oh and shes sleeping with me in my bed which is much more comfy. Also, we had a 3 hour drive this past AM but have been with family since and she's done plenty of running and winding down from the excitement of the day.

    My guess this is completely normal. Same thing happened to my sister's DS, when he was 2.  He didn't sleep at all the first night they were in a hotel...they just finally decided to let him watch cartoons and then they (the parents) went to sleep.  DD was the same way last weekend when we went on vacation (also stayed in a hotel)...she finally did go to sleep but it was a big battle. She was just soooo wired. We're still recovering from it.  It's a tough road. Does he sleep well in the car?  That was the only way we could get DD to catch up on some sleep last weekend. We took her for rides in the car to get her to nap; then if she had napped she slept better at night.
