horrible cramps with post partum period

I've never had cramps before.  I would sometimes get a mild backache but never cramps other than an occasional twinge, like I ate too much food or something.

I have had horrible cramps with my post partum periods.    My period has been exceptionally heavy(I soak through a super tampon in about an hour on day 1) but I am on coumadin due to multiple blood clots.    I go to get my levels checked in a couple days and will be asking if the super heavy flow is due to the coumadin and if that's related to my cramps.

However, I'm wondering anyone else is having cramps for the 1st time or cramps that are worse than usual.   Could my uterus still be healing and the mild contractions of a normal period just feel super intense because it's still healing?

Re: horrible cramps with post partum period

  • both of my girls were born via csection and since I have gotten wicked cramps every single month.

I am 10pp now and I was 9pp last time when I got pregnant.  So I don't know if it continues forever.

My friends that had natural deliveries also say that their periods have changed...so maybe its just pregnancy that changes things in one way or another.

My first was a vaginal delivery and I didn't have any major changes once my cycle got back to normal.   Other than my first couple cycles being insanely long, there really weren't any changes once things got back to normal.

I just wish I could take something.   Tyenol is not helping at all and due to the coumadin, I can't take Advil or Motrin.

  • I had really bad cramps with my 1st pp af and my cycles are normally not that heavy and I don't get bad cramps. I figured my uterus was still healing. I also got my 1st pp period at 8 weeks.

  • Are you BFing?  I am BFing and got my first PP AF at 4 months.  The first one was much heavier than normal but I only had minor cramps.  This last one was pretty normal flow and I never had cramps at all (I used to get cramps before pregnancy) probably thanks to the hormones from BFing.  I would ask your Dr. for sure.
  • I talked to my OB about this after I had DD. He said it can be normal to have some leakage after c/s from the uterus incision which can make for more painful periods.

The cramping did lessen with time after my 1st c/s.

Nope, I can't BF because of the meds I'm on.   I have an appt on Tues with the dr who is monitoring my coumadin levels so I'll ask him if the heavy flow and cramps are side effects of the meds.
