Recommend your heart rate monitor

I started running at the beginning of October using the iPhone app Couch to 5K.  I also started counting calories.  I found out Dec 4 that I'm pregnant.  I would love to keep running, but I think my heart rate is getting too high.  My joints are also more weak, and I feel tired while running. I plan to just start walking briskly, stretching, etc.  I might throw in some weights for arms.

My nurse midwife suggested a heart rate of no more than 140 while exercising.

Can anyone recommend a reliable, relatively inexpensive heart rate monitor? I want to make sure I'm not overdoing it.

Re: Recommend your heart rate monitor

  • There's a lot of research and articles on whether heart rate really matters so while youre NMW might have given you the old "don't go over 140" I'd do my research.  I quite frequently went over the 140 and sometimes over 150 but I listened to my body and how it was handling it, and that's a lot of what the research is saying.  I'll also tell you that its darn near impossible to do a lot of physical activity pregnant while keeping your HR under 140, my guess is its already in the 100's just at rest with pregnancy.

With that said I have the Polar FT7 and it works great for me.  When I upgrade I'll be going to the Garmin Forerunner 210 because i work out outside a lot and it will GPS my locations.

  • I have used one of the Garmin products for the last few years.  The only thing that I would recommend is that you research whether the product you buy actually bases your calorie count off of your heart rate or just does an average of weight and age.  Good luck.

  • I'm an aerobics instructor and using the polar ft7 and love it. Also when pregnant and teaching the dr told me to ditch the heart rate monitor so I didn't freak out and just to listen to my body.

  • I love my New Balance N4.  I do spin, Turbo Kick, and weight training and I just listen to my body more than anything.  I avg. a heart rate of 154 in spin & TK and 140 during my weight training classes.
