C-sections

Breech baby - C/S?

At my last appt (36 weeks) we found out that our baby is still breech... his/her head is by my right ribcage (Team Green btw!). Ob said he would give us some time to think about doing a version but would like to do it sooner than later, if we choose to have it done. So between now and my next appt (Thursday) I'll be doing some exercises I found on spinningbabies.com and just seeing what happens.

My questions are; has anyone had a successful version? Opinions? And then if that is not successful, is a c/s scheduled? Do they wait until I actually go into labor? I know I can ask my ob all of these but just wanted to get opinions and experiences. It's kind of overwhelming....

Thanks :)

Re: Breech baby - C/S?

  • Good luck with the version and/or spinningbabies.

I scheduled my c-section for Jan 4th about 3 weeks ahead of time.  My LO is same position as yours and has been since 29 weeks.  My OB wouldn't do it any sooner than 39 weeks and the insurance dept took care of the scheduling from there.  Of course if I go into labor sooner or he flips, all bets are off.  :)

  • We had the same situation. DS was wedged right into my ribcage. He was also in the Frank Breech position (V shaped, with his legs also in my ribcage).

We were given the option of a version, but chose not to do one. Our doctor's office did not have a good rate of successful versions (meaning they did not work, or the baby flipped back). To me, the risks of the version just weren't worth it to me. Our doctor told us that there was also a probability that I would have to deliver that day, if the version was not successful and/or the baby was in distress.

After deciding on the c/s, the hospital scheduling department call us to schedule the c/s. Our doctor basically said that going in to labor was not an option for me, so we had to schedule it before my due date. I guess that being in the Frank Breech position is not a 'favorable' delivery position. The doctor told me that I probably would never have gone into labor on my own anyway, due to the position. Personally, if I knew I was going to have a c/s, I would want to schedule it. I don't know that you're doctor would let you go into labor, unless you were hoping to try to deliver breech (which some doctors might do, but mine wouldn't).

I hope any of this information helps. It's very overwhelming. Good luck!

  • GET THE VERSION!!!! I had a successful one at 38 weeks.  Unfortunately I still ended up needed a c section due to a failed induction at 41w6d.  C-sections absolutely suck and I would do anything I could to try to avoid one.  My OB and other OBs told me that the risks and complications of  a c section are greater than a version ( even though both are very safe).  If your version doesn't work they will likely schedule a c section because they generally dont want scheduled sections to go into labor.  Good luck getting a head down baby!

  • Thanks for the responses! I just want to make the best decision... I feel like giving the version a try will make us feel like we tried every option. I would really hate to have a c/s but I know that it may not be up to me! I just really feel like I would miss out on the "birth experience". Sounds silly, I know... Ugh. Turn baby turn!

  • My baby was breech from 28 weeks on....water broke at 37 weeks so I did have a csection. I tried everything but a version to get him to turn (chiropractor, acupuncture, spinning babies, etc.). I was not willing to take the risks associated with the version. He was my 2nd, I had a vaginal birth with my first and was pretty upset at having to have a csection but it was the safest option for him.

  • Forgot to mention, I opted not to schedule a csection b.c I wanted to give DS every last opportunity to turn. My doctor was fine with me waiting to go into labor on my own.

  • Just a quick update... Went in today for the version, which was not successful :( Baby's head moved quite a ways but the bottom just moved farther in. I had 2 doctor's working and they did all they could within reason... I'm not going to lie, it hurt quite a bit but I'm glad I gave it a try! Pretty sore now. Just resting and waiting! My ob said he would give me until 39 weeks to see if the baby moves on it's own or if I want to schedule a c/s. I can also just wait until I go into labor with the expectation of a c/s. Thanks for the responses!

I was in the exact same position with Joseph. He re-injured my ribs that were bruised in a car accident a few years back. Same blinding pain courtesy of his sweet little noggin.

I turned down the version at my 35 week appointment because I had 'borderline' amniotic fluid levels and it just didn't feel rigt given the risks associated with the procedure. Less than two weeks later, I had to deliver him because of low fluid and his frank breech position. I had a gut feeling I wouldn't go into labor with him and he wouldn't flip no matter what position I tried to use from spinningbabies. Kinda hard to flip a baby who has very little fluid to move around in the first place.

I wish you the best of luck on a smooth c-section and recovery. Before you know it, your LO will be here and be turning a year old in no time.
