Babies: 6 - 9 Months

How much less milk after starting solids?

My DD is 6 1/2 months.  She is eating 2 "meals" a day after feedings. Since starting solids she is eating less milk. She used to drink 35oz. a day and now she drinks about 28-30oz day.  I know they say to keep her main source of food from milk, but is it okay if she starts to eat a little less milk?  She is only getting a little bit of rice or oatmeal in the morning (sometimes a little fruit as well) and then about 2 oz. of fruits or veggies at night.  Is this okay/normal? Thanks! :)

Re: How much less milk after starting solids?

  • DS is still on a 3hr eating schedule and our pedi recommended working toward replacing one bottle a day with just solids.   So far we haven't dropped the noon botttle entirely because he usually gets fed up with the solids before taking in enough, but his milk intake is 2-4oz less daily than what it used to be.  As long as she isn't hungry I wouldn't worry about it.

  • DS's milk intake has not changed. He nurses in the morning and in the evening. He gets 3 5oz bottles of BM at daycare. He gets solids after his 12:30pm feeding and then again around 5-5:30pm. He's been on solids since 6 months (no cereal though).

  • I just commented this in another post but here is what the pedi's say in the book Baby 411...

*6-9 months - 28-36 oz. formula/bm and 6-14 oz. food. The more ounces of food they eat, the lower amount of formula/bm they will take.

    *9-12 months - 20-30 oz. formula/bm and 10-18 oz. food.

    12 months + - 16 oz. whole or 2% milk and 3 solid meals a day plus 2 snacks.

  • I'm slightly torn. My pedi said that if he dropped a feeding that I should back on solids. But it doesn't seem like you are feeding that much in solids. I BF, so although he nurses as frequently, I have no way of knowing if his intake has changed.

  • I think as long as you offer solids after a bottle (an hour or so later so LO is still hungry enough to want solids), I wouldn't worry about that slight decrease.

  • DS is FF and his intake has changed ..Pedi said to me between 24-30..no less than 24. DS is getting about 26oz per day. He was at 30, but dropped the after dinner (solid) bottle and his 6oz bottle at 3pm dropped to a 4oz "snack" bottle after feeding him solids for lunch (he gets 2 tablespoons of veggies and a 6oz bottle for lunch).

  • Thank you, everyone!!  I really appreciate all of your advice!  We will just keep doing what we're doing then, sounds like it's pretty normal.  Merry Christmas to everyone! Big Smile
