this is the one we're considering too My family is all giving me $ towards it as Christmas gifts this year. We compared it with the XS and decided the T3 was worth the extra $50. We really don't have another few hundred to upgrade to a T3i or even a T2i, so the price difference between those two was the difference between us getting or not getting a DSLR.
I've used my dads T3 a lot with the kit lens and it takes amazing, fast pictures.
Sorry to butt in!
ETA and its $447 with prime shipping on amazon right now!

Thanks for your input! I'm loving mine already! And like you didn't have an extra couple hundred to put towards tht T3i or T2i.
Melissa - do you have the 50mm lens everyone raves about? Does it make a huge difference? Trying to decide if we should get that too? My dad has an extra lens but its a long zoom he uses for sports and photographing airplanes at air shows. I love the pictures I get with his kit lens on auto, so I wasn't sure?

I bought the 50mm/f1.8 and LOVE it. It's actually the first lense I put on the body and haven't taken it off yet (mind you I got the camera on Tues)
Haha I already hijacked it! What's the difference? Why is it better? I'm a complete novice, so I'm just learning what words like aperture and ISO even mean
First it's the most affordable lens you'll find. Every time I think I'd like to go shopping for a new lens, I'm reminded how freaking expensive this hobby is...so I stick to my 50 mm! Hahaha!
But it's great for low light! The gif below kind of helps explain why. When it's open the widest (f/1.8) it's able to let in a lot of light making it easier to get great photos in low light situations, such as in your home.
Haha. I always tt scared when I see my name in a post subject. lol. Yes, I have been all over the place with cameras. I'm scared to commit to a DSLR. I want one but they make me nervous. lol. Right now I'm considering the Panasonic Lumix gf3. its not a DSLR, but its better than a regular p&s. I'm just afraid it will be a waste of money. If its still on sale after Christmas I may just go for it. I just don't know though. I still can't stop thinking about an DSLR
