We're also using Viracord. I work at a pediatric hospital that does transplants and the clincal manager told me she's used Viracord cord blood before and that it thawed and transfused well. I realize this is nothing more than an insurance policy that we're likely not to use, but given the advances for utilization of cord blood, we think it's about a lot more than just cancer. At our hospital, we use it to cure Sickle Cell and have done it for a few auto-immune diseases. At another local hospital, they are using it in research trials to grow heart valves (which can grow with a child as opposed to having multiple open heart surgeries to replace the valve as the child grows). Anyway, this is an insurance policy that will make me feel better!

We're going to donate our baby's cord blood to one of our local hospitals, which has recently set up a cord blood bank. It doesn't cost us anything to do a public donation; the only bad thing is that they can't accept public donations (only private collections) between Fridays at 3 pm and Sundays at 3 pm for various reasons, so I hope LO isn't born during that time frame because we would really like to be able to donate.
