Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Formula and Baby Food Question amount

My daughter up until recently would have between 30-32 oz (roughly 4 8oz bottles) of formula a day. However, now that she has been loving purees, she has been roughly drinking 26 oz of formula (3 6oz bottles and an 8 oz one) and eating a ridiculous amount of purees. Today she had 5 jars of 2.5 oz (one at breakfast, two at lunch and two at dinner) and just seems to get annoyed when you won't open a third jar.

 She is really tiny too.

It just seems like a LOT of food to me--plus I worry about her not wanting the formula as much anymore.

Re: Formula and Baby Food Question amount

  • When do you offer the food? I would only give it to her after a bottle so that you ensure she gets the formula that she needs first.

Either way, 26 oz. of formula is still pretty good. According to the book Baby 411, written by a couple of pedi's they say:

6-9 months - 28-36 oz. formula/bm and 6-14 oz. food. The more they eat, the lower ounces of formula. So closer to 28 instead of 36.

    9-12 months - 20-30 oz. formula/bm and 10-18 oz. food.

    12 months + - 16 oz. whole or 2% milk and 3 solid meals plus 2 snacks

  • She gets formula when we wakes up in the AM, then an hour later she gets breakfast. She also gets formula before her nap, and then when she wakes up she gets lunch. Around 2pm or so, she has another bottle. Then at 5pm she has dinner.  At about 6:30 or so she has her last bottle (which is the 8oz one)

  • Well, if she is hungry, she's hungry, but I agree with the poster who said to offer her the formula first.

My daughter was faithfully taking 32 oz (as much as 35). Since we've started purees, it's anywhere from 28-32. I spread her meals out like this:

    6 a.m.- 8 oz bottle

8 a.m.- fruit and yogurt (about 4 oz total)

    10-10:30- 8 oz bottle

noonish- veggie (about 2 oz) plus a few lil crunchies and/or puffs

    2:30- 8 oz bottle

5:00-5:30- Meat/veggie puree plus an extra fruit or veggies (3-4 oz total). Sometimes a few crunchies or puffs.

    6:30-7 P.M.- 8 oz bottle

(I always offer her four 8 oz bottles, but these days, she sometimes leaves an ounce or 2 behind).

ETA: It sounds like you spread yours out similar to mine. Also, based on the PP's amounts of formula/solids she listed, it sounds like your daughter is doing fine. :)
