Tell me your engagement story

It is completely dead here and I got the idea from lurking on TTGP (no, not trying yet). How did your spouse propose to you?

Re: Tell me your engagement story

  • I had graduated college a few months earlier and my DH (then boyfriend) was finishing his senior year. I was working two jobs and he was working a full time job and going to school full time. Anyway, he arranged for me to get two days off work without me knowing including calling my coworkers and getting coverage for me. He asked my roommate to pack a bag for me and picked me up for lunch ( I thought I was going back to work afterwards) and drove me to the airport. We flew to Hawaii where he told me the trip was an early Christmas present (it was early December). The next morning he woke me up early to watch the sun rise on the beach and proceeded to ask me to be his wife! I had no idea and even asked him in the airport on the way there if he was going to propose and he said no! We then proceeded to have breakfast on the beach, go horseback riding, and then go to Turtle Cove on North Shore ( I love turtles) and finished with a nice dinner.

  • I haven't been on this board in a while but I thought I'd chime in! I'll have to start coming back more often.

DH proposed to me on his birthday.  His birthday is December 8th. I went to his apartment on his birthday to meet him to go to dinner. He said "look what the guys at work gave me as a birthday gift" ..under the tree was a box wrapped in birthday gift wrap. I opened up the box (which was already opened to look like he opened his gift) and starring at me was the ring..then he said "Well do ya?" LOL.

    Nothing fancy..and very "us" lol

  • Your story is pretty cool!

We were moving to a another state in like 3 days so the apartment was pretty much packed and most of our clothes too, it was my birthday so I didn't want to do a big deal and DH suggested we go ice skating (my bday is in Feb) I said no way too cold and I that I had packed everything already. He insisted, I said no. He suggested we go to the beach where we shared out first kiss, I said no way, even colder by the water. I said let's just go eat at Dave and Busters and play for a little bit. He insisted on doing something "special" for my birthday. I ended up arguing with him and by then I had ruined his plan A and plan B. I got mad I told him I didn't feel like doing anything and to just go home. After a few minutes of me sulking, he came in the room--the extra room/office where I was on the computer, and in between boxes he told me how he wanted to make that night a very special night for me, he pulled the ring, got on one knee and asked "will you marry me?". I blocked out for a couple, lol then crying I said yes!

Talk about feeling like a jerk! His plan was to do it while ice skating and do it on the rink! Stupid me! lol But he said I should have an actual proposal so we drove to the beach and proposed twice!

  • I love that you were arguing with him Steph. I actually did too when my boyfriend woke me up early, I kept telling him I didn't want to get up, I wanted to sleep in!

  • My H also proposed to me on his birthday.

I was making him dinner (we lived together). He came home and was acting all weird. He was pacing around and rambling, not making sense. I gave him a hug and asked if he wanted his birthday present. He said "do you know what would make this the best birthday ever?".  I said "I bet you want a BJ". And he said "No, if you will marry me". LOL.  I leave the BJ part out when I tell the store IRL.

  • Mine planned an "oh so subtle" one night trip to Niagara Falls in November. I had a big feeling that there was a proposal coming as we had talked about marriage already.

I kept waiting and waiting and then it was 11:00 at night and we were laying in bed watching "Jack Frost". He turns to me and says "I want to spend the rest of my life with you". I say "Yah, me too". Then I got the "Will you marry me?". I was so excited I could barely sleep that night.

We were planning to use my grandma's wedding set (DH had the tiny diamond from the engagement ring put in the wedding ring and a bigger diamond put in) so we stopped at my parent's house on the way home to tell them and get them out of the safe. They were cut off her because of her arthritis but I squeezed the ends together (a la gumball machine ring) and wore the engagement ring until we brought it to the jeweler to fix.

  • Wow - the Hawaii story is amazing! And the BJ one really made me laugh :-)

DH was visiting me from Europe, and we had been looking at rings together, so it wasn't entirely unexpected, but I didn't know if he was planning on proposing while he was in the States or when I flew to him a few months later (which would have been our 2 year dating anniversary). My parents helped him find a limo company and make dinner reservations at a Chinese restaurant, so I kinda thought something was coming when a limo picked us up.

At the restaurant, our waitress totally hit on him while I was in the bathroom, but he was politely giving her one-word answers when I came back. When he reached for his wallet to pay my heart skipped like 3 beats and started racing, even after I realized it was just his wallet. In the limo on the way home he got down on one knee and proposed.

After I said yes and we kissed he said, "I had to propose now because if I had taken the ring back and proposed when you visited in the summer I would have had to pay customs tax on it." Confused Um... yeah. But that's my DH. Honest to a fault even if it would sometimes be better if he just kept his mouth shut.

  • Does anyone remember the Lifesavers candy commercial from the late 80's/early 90's where there are two kids sitting on the front porch steps and the little boy says "Dorthy will you marry me" and she says "Where's my ring", then he hands her a Lifesaver?  My hubby always thought that was the cutest thing.

I was home for one night in September between two long business trips.  I was dead tired and laying face down on the rug in the living room.  He went into the bedroom and when he came out he started pulling on my hand.  When he got my hand loose he dropped a Lifesaver into it.  I looked at the candy and looked at him and tried to get it over my finger and told him it didn't fit.  So he pulled out the diamond ring and said "try this one on".  I spent the rest of the night asking him "Really?"  Eventually he just said, "yes, now go to sleep"  I don't think I ever did that night!

  • On New Years Eve 2008, we were snowed in, so we got into our sweats and opened a bottle of wine.  It was getting close to midnight, and in NYC, they were showing people proposing on tv.

I poo-pooed the idea of proposing on New Years, and headed to the bathroom.  He rushed me out, and then promptly at midnight, he popped the question.  OOPS!  My bad...........

  • DH and my dad planned the proposal together. My dad and I planned to spend the day together just the 2 of us. At that time DH and his buddies had a live computer help radio show. I had never called into the show before and DH told me I should since they were in need of callers. I didn't know what to say so he wrote out a script. After going out to breakfast, my dad said we should go to the radio studio because he wanted to see it. He said we could call in from the studio. All of our family and friends all around the country were listening live because they all knew what was happening. You can hear the entire show at geeks2you.net, radio show, 5/31/2008 or watch the video of just the proposal youtube "Andrew Lyons Proposal" It's too bad I didn't wear any makeup or proper fitting clothes that day.
