Hi ladies,
I will be moving to NYC in July most likely to UWS or UES (any thoughts on locale?) I have a 2 year old and we are expecting our second on April so we will need to purchase a double stroller prior to moving. I currently love my bugaboo chameleon so I am partial to the bugaboo brand however I keep hearing that I will want a tandem on the streets of NYC. Any advice regarding the bugaboo donkey versus Baby Jogger City Select? If we buy a baby jogger we will also get a BOB but if we get the bugaboo it will be our only double. Thanks in advance!
Bree
Re: Moving to NYC, Double Stroller Advice
Congrats on the move and on your pregnancy! Sounds like you have a lot to look forward to in the coming months! As far as neighborhoods go, we're on the UWS in the low 80s and I love it. There are 5 playgrounds within 5 or 6 blocks of our house, Central Park and Riverside Park are great areas for play, the Children's Museum and the American Museum of Natural History are steps away, the cross town bus and two subway lines make everything else in the city very accessible, and it has a family friendly neighborhood vibe where you have tons of families in street cafes and shops geared towards kids. LOVE the Upper West Side!!
As far as doubles go, the most popular ones in the city seem to be the Phil n Ted or the Citi Select. You really don't see any side by side strollers here. I occasionally see doulie Bob's in the park, but I couldn't imagine hauling it up and down subway stairs or folding it up to go on the bus. If you want to stick with the bugaboo, another popular option around here is to get a stroller board for the older child. But, given yours is kinda young, that might not work for you. Though, you could always push your older one in the stroller and carry your younger one in a sling/carrier.
Best of luck!!
Congrats on your move. UWS does have everything you could imagine, especially on the weekend. However, unless you want to every other pedestrian to give you a dirty look, and find it nearly impossible to enter the front door of many shops, my only advice would be to avoid big strollers. I moved here from California, and my first impression of all the buildings I entered was "gee everything seems so much smaller and cramped"
But since I have now called NY my home for over ten years, I have developed some typical NY pet peeves. One of them I call "Hands Across America". It's when a family forms a horizontal line across the sidewalk, no one can pass them, and they walk very very slowly. Usually they are just out enjoying themselves, which is perfectly wonderful, but you gotta remember the two hundred people behind you who just want to get to their destination without having to walk into the street to get around you. I digress, but you get the point, time and space are precious commodities here.
I love our Phil and Teds, we have one that is old, they don't make that model anymore, but it is still great.
If you do want a side by side, check out the Mountain Buggy Duet. It is the same width as a single but still incredibly adaptable if a bit narrow. It gets great reviews. If I had two closer together in age and expected them both to be riding, I would have splurged on it, but I didn't want a side by side when my older one is almost 4, I want him walking most often.
Such a great term for that! And yes that drives me SO crazy!
