Worried about weight & pregnancy

Hi,

We are just start to TTC and I am not in shape.

Im overweight for my short 5'3" height, but I am fairly strong, don't get winded easily and can hold my own during running or yoga. But I have more belly fat than I care to admit (can suck in really good & hide it!) and I'm afraid it'll get out of control.

Here's my issue, people who are already moms, I'm hoping you can inspire me, if I get pregnant (yay!) and go the 9 mo, I plan to eat as healthy as humanly possible. No fast food, little to no sweets, etc. I also want to exercise the whole time, walking a lot, light weights, maybe light yoga.

So my main issue here is that I don't want to be pregnant and start getting huge and be so upset after having a kid that I am "flubby" and my body is a frraking wreck!

Please help, have any of you gotten in Better shape after? Or maintained a decent weight while pregnant?

Im all for the gaining weight, I know it's natural and I want what's best for baby, I'm just trying to save what's left of my small body self-esteem. :(

Re: Worried about weight & pregnancy

  • I'm pregnant with #2 now, but after having #1 and before getting pregnant again I got in better shape than I was in before getting pregnant the first time. I started off this pregnancy weighing at least 5 lbs less than I weighed starting out pregnancy #1 (and I was not overweight before - I was 5'7 135 when I got pregnant the first time, 128 when I got pregnant the second time).

I worked out 5x a week and have continued to do so and will keep it up as long as I am able.

Yep this was me too. I was in my early 20's when I had DS so I never really gave much thought to eating healthy and exercising.  I ended up gaining 50lbs. After he was born, I worked my butt off and I was in better shape than ever.

You'll be fine. Its just all a matter of how much effort you want to put into exercising and eating healthy.

  • I would suggest getting in the best shape you can before you get pregnant.  This way you can build healthy habits.  Pregnancy is not really the time to start doing anything extravagent that you were not already doing beforehand.  Realistically you may have to exercise less and eat more when you are pregnant.  So try to really be healthy beforehand.  I actually lost about 15 lbs 6 months before I got pregnant and so far gained back 10 lbs and I'm currently 6 months pregnant.  I'm really glad I lost weight and got in shape beforehand because now I motivated myself into knowing I have self control to have a healthy lifestyle regardless of whether I am pregnant or not.  Good luck!
  • I recently found out I have PCOS, my doctor said I was 57 pounds overweight --- she told me losing weight and getting in good shape would help me overall in So many ways.... I went back on BCP for 3 months and lost 30 pounds--- cut out refined sugar/flour etc and ramped up my excersise schedule. I feel great.. and DH and I decided 30 pounds was something to be proud of and we started TTC again this month, I feel really strong and my core is A LOT stronger than it was before, I'm still focusing on strengthing it and eating right until we get our BFP!

     Good Luck!

There is LOTS of good core excersies online that help your back/stomach.  :) Pilates is your friend! :)

  • Hi! My DD is now almost 2 and I am 5'4. I went from a healthy 150 lbs to 205 lbs during the course of my pregnancy. I have recently started going back to the gym and walking almost 3 miles at a time in hopes to lose it. I'm currently sitting at 182, not good. Sad I suggest that you get in the best shape you can and not gain 55 lbs during your pregnancy like I did. I know, easier said than done! Just eat healthy and work out. I didn't work out once during my pregnancy and now I regret it. GL!
  • I understand that fear! After #1  & #2 it was very easy to get back in shape. I am 5'7 and after both pregnancies I was back at around 135 in a few short weeks.

I started pregnancy #3 at 123 lbs, and weighed in at 168 the day I had ds#3. It took me 6 months to lose all of it. I did weight watchers, aerobics, and started running three miles, 3-4 times per week.

I am definitely worried about losing it (again) but my best advice is to stay active and eat healthy during your pregnancy because those are habits that will only help you during and afterwards. Good luck!

  • I was overweight when I got pregnant with my daughter.  I tried to be pretty strict with what I ate, tried to walk more and keep an eye on my weight gain.  I gained about 20 or 25 pounds so my doctor and I were happy with that.  And a few weeks her birth I was below my pre-pregnancy weight (gotta love breast feeding!).  Right now I'm working on getting healthier and we are also TTC #2.  You just have to be more strict but definitely possible :)   Good luck!
