Ruptured Ovarian Cyst Question

On Sunday morning, after a rough puking session, I started feeling these terrible pains throughout the entire left side of my abdomen, obliques, under the rib cage, and even my left shoulder.  I thought at first that maybe I pulled those muscles because I was puking so hard.  The pain was almost unbearable.  It hurt everytime I would breathe, cough, sneeze, or move.  That night my DH took me to the ER because he couldn't stand to see me in pain.  I don't even want to talk about how horrible that exerpience was through the puking, pain, headaches, MRI, sonograms, waiting, hunger, worry over our babies, but the end conclusion 14 hours later was that I had a ruptured ovarian cyst and the forgein fluid was irritating my diaphram and internal organs=INTENSE PAIN.  They said that since I did IFV my chances for this were higher, which I had never heard about.  They also said that I had more cysts on my ovaries, but none that were large enough for concern.  There wasn't anything that they could do except they said to manage the pain, which is a problem for me because all pain meds make me get sick :(

Okay, with the questions...1)  Have any of you ever experienced this??  What happened??  2)  Have you exerpienced it more than once??  Should I be concerned about the other cysts?  3)  The pain has subsided everywhere except my shoulder, which is bizarre to me because its been almost 6 days.  How long did your symptons hang around??  I really wanted to post this as a resource, as well.  I wish that I would have googled my symptons more, so that I would have gone to the hospital when it happened verses a brutal 10 hours later.

Re: Ruptured Ovarian Cyst Question

  • I'm not nor have I ever been pregnant with multiples but I've ruptured ovarian cysts. I think my pain lasted at most 7-10 days. It was terrible when it happened though! It has happened 2 or 3 times. I've had multiple ultrasounds which showed numerous cysts and only the couple  actually ruptured. Most of them shouldn't rupture. I'm sorry you had to go through that!

  • I had an ovarian cyst burst once, years ago before I started TTC. It was the worst pain I've ever felt. I thought I was dying. They're aren't that uncommon actually. A lot of my friends had the same thing happen to them. Unless it starts happening frequently I wouldn't worry about it reoccurring soon. I had a bunch of smaller cysts from my 3 rounds of IVF but nothing has burst. They should go down over time. If you're still in pain then maybe they can give you some pain meds. My intense pain didn't last very long b/c I went to the ER and got morphine. I don't remember having pain elsewhere, but I also have vicodin at home and I don't remember if I took anything else.
  • I had one years ago before I started trying to get pregnant, and I also had a large cyst that had not burst by the time of the u/s (and they believed I had endometriosis, which I do) so I had laparascopic surgery to remove it (also because of the endo). By the time I had the surgery, the cyst had dissolved significantly.

After I stopped breastfeeding when my twins were about 7 months, I had a cyst burst within the first month.  My period was very delayed and I had cramping, but then felt the excruciating pain of the cyst bursting. I went to the hospital, they found the fluid from the burst cyst and multiple other cysts but none big enough to be concerned about. I had pain/ cramping for about a week after. I followed up with my OB, there's really not much they can do other than pain meds (they make me sick too!), unless the cyst is very large. The change in hormones can cause the cysts, so I am trying to regulate that with the pill. My periods are extremely irregular now and I've had severe cramping throughout the last two cycles...I'm not sure if this has anything to do with cysts or not.

Sorry you are going through this, I hope the pain improves quickly. Congrats on your pregnancy!

  • I had a huge one once that required surgery because the ovary was starting to twist. They were concerned it would cause me to lose the ovary and the tube!

Yes with IVF you have higher chances of ovarian cysts (actually with any ART treatment with meds) but now that you aren't stimming anymore I wouldn't worry as much!

  • I'm so sorry. I was in a similar situation last weekend as well. I had a 10 cm cyst on my right ovary and around 9 weeks it was causing severe pain so my dr sent me to ER. They determined it was twisting and untwisting, but since it had untwisted we opted out of surgery bc of the babies. I had not had any problems until last weekend. The cyst is now 5 cm. I had sharp sudden severe pain with vomiting so dr sent me to ER. They once again said it was twisting and untwisting. My dr said we could have lap surgery to remove the cyst, before it got worse. But after the pain subsided they explained all the risks of surgery while pregnant and we decided to wait it out. I feel like I'm walking around with a ticking bomb, it is so stressful bc i feel like at any moment it could twist again, but the next time it might stay twisted. I'm trying to think positive and not worry too much.

I also have other cysts but they are small (3cm or less). How big was yours that ruptured? I'm sorry about your pain, but I'd almost be relieved that it is gone. Mine is just hanging around forever. :-(

I don't know how big it was because it took so many tests for them to actually figure out what was actually going on.  At one point, they called frantic for me to come back in for the MRI to rule at a ruptured spleen.  They certainly were not prepared to diagnosis my issue, which sucked for me.  I am at day 6 and I still have a pretty sharp and severe pain when I breathe hard, which is more often than not these days.  It sucks and I wouldn't wish this on anyone :(  Good luck with yours.....and I'm sorry that you're having to worry about that on top of everthing else.
