When did your LO go to the bathroom alone at night?

DS has started waking us up at night because he needs to go to the bathroom. We  still have him in his crib because he doesn't try to climb out and has never seen his friends' bedrooms to know they have beds now!

I don't feel like he's old enough to be roaming the hall and bathroom alone at night yet. And yet, we are up with the babies multiple times a night already, so one less waking would be good!

When did you take this step?

Re: When did your LO go to the bathroom alone at night?

  • DD has just recently started to go by herself, so 3.5. I told her she has to wake me up though before she goes, which she is pretty good about.

  • I am not going to be much help.  Both my older boys were moved to a twin bed before they turned 2. The oldest wakes up and will go by himself - but he was not dry through out the night till he was 4, the middle one still wears a training pant, but he lets us know if he has to go (he is scared of the dark scary bathroom at night). And while right now I am not ready to move my youngest to a bed yet... I am sure by the time he is ready to get up to go pee in the middle of the night he will be out of the crib.

  • DD#1 just started going by herself instead of waking us up to help her a few months ago. Maybe a month or two after she turned 3. She has been in a toddler bed since 1.5 years old though. Most nights that she does this, she'll crawl into our bed afterwards too.
My 2 girls, both born on a Friday the 13th, are exactly 2 years, 2 months, 2 hours and 2 minutes apart! And Baby Boy joined us October 11, 2013! image

  • DD was in a regular twin bed before she was 2.  We have a gate at the top of our stairs that we close at night, so when she wakes up she can't really get into anything other than other bedrooms or the bathroom.  She still doesn't wake up all the time, but it's nice that she is starting to.

  • DS just got out of night diapers he still wakes me up to take him.  He has gone once by himself - I heard him - I was in bed but not asleep.

  • My DD is nearly 4 and still calls for me to take her to the potty in the middle of the night.  Then again she won't leave her room when she wakes up, even in the morning.  She calls for me and waits for me to come get her (not because we told her to do this, she just has never thought to come out on her own, I guess).

  • I pretty much let her decide her readiness and I would say it was around 4 when she would go potty by herself at night.

ETA:  she was in a twin bed by 22 mos and I finally took the gate off of her doorway at around 3 or so.

  • DS was in a full-size bed at 2.5 (with no gate), so we have no issues with him getting up. However, he is still in a pull-up at night, wakes up wet, and has given us no indication he is ready to potty at night. I assume this will just come in time? If he was ready, I would have no issue allowing him to go on his own from the get go since we trust him at night.

  • Right after she turned 3. We put a night light in her bathroom and she goes and goes back to bed. She does come downstairs every so often but it's usually for a bad dream. We're on the exact opposite side of the house from her and on different floors. Somehow she has no problem with it! She's been in her big girl bed since this time last year.

  • My DD is 3.5 and we still put her in a pull-up at night.  She can use the bathroom by herself but doesn't usually wake up in the middle of the night for it.  Her pull up is dry in the morning maybe 25% of the time.  I am hoping to be done with it by 4-4.5.  We didn't switch her to a bed till she turned 3 which is right when we got serious about potty training so her being in a crib wasn't an issue.

  • My almost 5 yr old (in January) comes to our room and tells us he needs to go potty. We have told him multiple times its ok to go without us. We also leave on nightlights in the house. But he still comes to our room first.

  • My DD kind of sleepwalks to the bathroom.  We can hear her whining and then she tends to barely make it to the bathroom in time, so we rush to help her.  She is definitely completely out of it and needs help.  There were a few times we didn't help her because she made it to the bathroom, and she sat on the toilet for like 15 minutes in a daze!
  • Our only bathroom is on the first floor and bedrooms are on the 2nd floor, so DD has had a potty chair next to her bed since she was trained at 26 months and has always just gotten out of bed by herself to use it.  She was in a toddler bed at 24 months, and recently switched to a twin.  A potty in the bedroom is a great way to avoid the wandering through the house at night.

  • I want to say that my older DD who is now 5 1/2 and has been potty trained day and night since around 2 years 9 months started going by herself in the last year - a little less I think.  My younger DD, will be 4 in March, calls me if she has to go.  I would say somewhere around the 4 1/2 to 5 year old range.  My kids have been in beds since around 17-18 months each and we never had an issue with them leaving their rooms or roaming the halls or house.
