how to carry 2 older babies up/down stairs

Any quick ideas.  I want something super simple and quick.  I could wear 2 carriers, but for me that just takes too much time and it's so bulky.

Are there slings that just slip over my shoulder that I could use on each side and just carry them on my hip?

I literally just need something that I can pop on and off, take the kids upstairs and downstairs.

We live in a 3rd story walk-up, with no elevator.  Until now I've been taking both carseats, but they are outgrowing them and we will need convertible seats any day now.

  • You could use an ergo for one and just carry the other. I never used 2 carriers when I needed to carry both. This may take some practice but I wonder if you could take them both out of the straps in the car seats and then put 1 on 1 hip, get the other out with 1 arm and get that baby on the other hip. It's easier to do this when they're standing, but maybe it could be done. I don't know. If not then I'd get an Ergo and just carry the other with your arms.

  • i used to carry two at once a lot, but it's hard, especially if they don't hold themselves up well yet. (but your arms get super buff.)

i think the idea of an ergo and carrying the other is good.

  • I always do one kid on each hip. It's actually easier for me to carry them than SO because I have hips that each kid can rest on my hip. You could do 2 slings if you want but I think it's easier just to carry them if it's such a short distance. Now carrying three? I haven't mastered that one just yet! Lol.
  • Maybe I have ginormous hips (and we live in a 2-story so we only have 1 set up steps that are maybe 9' tall) but I just carry one kid on each hip.
  • Before they were supporting themselves really well and I needed to carry both I'd strap one in the Bjorn (the heavier one) and carry the other.

I think with Ergos you can do one front and one back. I carry one on each hip all the time now, but I wouldn't feel safe doing that on stairs. I'd probably opt for some sort of carrier for one and carrying the other, or two carriers.

Ask on the AP board - there are lots of BWing mamas that could probably suggest something that would work well.

  • Yeah, I would just do one in an Ergo and carry the other on your hip. If you're talking about outside stairs one on each hip wouldn't work too well since you need a hand free to unlock the door. ;) The walkup would definitely be tricky with young twins; I feel for you!

  • Mine are 22 and 24lbs and I carry them both on my hips. It's good for my biceps as well ;)
