Austin has been great to us, and I've really grown to love it in the year we've been here. But I haven't been able to find good Chinese food. I'm tired of nasty, over-sugared Chinese food in congealed corn starch sauces in unnatural colors. It's gotten so I make DH go alone for his Chinese food fix because the places we've tried have been so bad. I'd rather make it at home. But I'd really rather find a place I like!
Can anyone recommend a place to get good, authentic-ish Chinese? So far we liked Din Ho the best, but it's a bit of a drive for us, so bonus points for someplace South or Central.

Well this post was sparked by a lunch trip to Hunan Lion, over on Lamar. I think they used a pound of sugar just on our two meals alone, and my chicken was in a thick magenta sauce. Yuck. We've also tried Tien Jin once, but only the buffet, so maybe that was our mistake? We've done delivery from China Hill a couple of times and some things were so so, others were terrible. I think that's it for places in the South.
Up North, we liked Din Ho a lot, and also Asia Cafe. But they're both a hike for a random Chinese craving.
Any suggestions?

Chinatown Downtown is really good in my opinion. It's a little pricey but the portions are generous.

We used to go here some years ago, and liked it. But, DH went last month for the first time in forever and said it was horrible. We go to a little mom and pop in RR- Happy Dragon, sorry no south recs.
Thanks for the recs all--they are on the list!
My favorite is cantonese, especially dim sum dishes like steam pork buns, shumai and egg custard cups. I also love the pan fried noodles and roasted pork and chicken.
But honestly, I'd settle for an americanized chinese place that has a decent hot and sour soup and mapo tofu.
Mmmm...I love mapo tofu. I haven't found one in a restaurant here that I like. The best was served at my office. We had a cafeteria and every day, along with standard American fare, they served several Japanese options, a Chinese option, and an Indian dish. I miss the food there!
I've recently found China Dynasty at Manchaca & Slaughter. It's tasty.
