1st shots - tylenol before?

I didn't really pay attention months ago when all the first shot posts were going on.  My LO has his first shots tmrw, my friend told me to give him tylenol 30 minutes before. Is there a need for this?

Thanks.

Re: 1st shots - tylenol before?

  • No, our pedi explained to me that Tylenol given prior to the shots may decrease the effectiveness of the shots. If your LO is acting like his legs are real sore, crying a lot and or fever (I've been told over 101) then if you want you can give LO some Tylenol. As for the strength check with your doctor or the pharmacist because there are some that come concentrated. HTH.

  • My pedi said no for two reasons:
     1) Some kids have no or little reaction and know you've just medicated your kid for no reason.

    2) Vacs are supposed to help build anitbodies. If you give tylenol ahead of time it could single to not build as much resistance.

K only needed it after her 2 months shots. She's been a little fussy other times, but never got a fever or really upset.

  • I don't give meds for shots unless I have an inconsolable baby hours after they are given.  I don't want to mask a fever, because that shows a reaction of some sort.  If a fever shows, or baby is inconsolable, then yes, I'll do it. Use each shot appt as a learning experience. For example, my DS reacted horribly to his 2 month shots, but never any after.  My DD, hasn't had an issue yet. Each kid is so different.

  • omg my pedi told me off for even mentioning it! She said they need to know if the child has a fever when they come in because if they do they won't do the shots and tylenol would suppress any low grade fever that they might have. After is fine though.

  • We are doing an alternative & selective vaccination schedule.
DS has gotten 4 shots now and has only needed Tylenol twice.
He never had a fever but was inconsolably fussy; he only needed one dose for the day and after that he was fine.
    GL with his first shots!
  • Hmm, I am glad I asked forsure!

    Thanks ladies.

  • Is my doctor the only one that said to give it to my son beforehand? I always do... and then every 4 hours after for the rest of that day. We didn't the first day and he screamed ALL DAY LONG! And this is from a kid who doesn't cry unless the world is about to end...

  • Our pedi said we could 30 min before her shots so we do every time.  She has been really good afterwards too, never has a fever or any kind of reaction.

  • Wow! I am glad I read this post. My older DD pedi always had me give her tylenol before apt and this DD pedi says the same thing. I will have to ask next apt.

  • My Pedi has never said one way or another - I didn't ask though. I don't medicate unless a reason presents itself though. Ashley has only needed it once - after the 6 month shots that included her first flu shot. We got to second booster flu shot yesterday and she didn't need acetaminophen.
